Viktor Gyokeres Transfer News Today: Arsenal OVERTAKEN in race for Sporting star

All the latest transfer news on Viktor Gyokeres, including updates on Arsenal's pursuit of the Sporting CP star.
Atletico overtake Arsenal
According to Portuguese outlet Record, Atletico Madrid have surged into the lead for the Swedish sharpshooter. The LaLiga giants have placed Gyokeres at the top of their shortlist of offensive summer reinforcements.
Atleti's interest in the 26-year-old dates back to when Andrea Berta was at the club. The Italian, of course, is now leading Arsenal's recruitment, and his appointment has seen the Gunners reignite their interest in Gyokeres.
However, in recent days, Arsenal have focused heavily on Benjamin Sesko, who appears to be the favoured option of manager Mikel Arteta. Talks are taking place with RB Leipzig over a potential deal.
This has given Atleti a window of opportunity, and the Spanish side are 'trying to gather arguments' to convince Gyokeres and Sporting. Armed with Champions League and Club World Cup funds, and also boasting a Nike connection with Gyokeres, Atleti feel that they have a good chance of landing the Swede this summer.
Gyokeres coy on future

Gyokeres himself was once again forced to address his links with Arsenal in conversation with former Coventry teammate Leo Ostigard. The Hoffenheim defender, who is an Arsenal fan, called the striker on FaceTime for an appearance on the Flymoduspod podcast.
The podcast host took the opportunity to ask Gyokeres: "You know I’m wondering, I know you can’t say much about it, but Viktor, where are you going in the summer transfer window? Can you give us a hint? Is it Arsenal? Which three? What are the alternatives?"
"Haha, no," Gyokeres responded. "We will see, nobody knows anything yet. I wish I had a more fun answer, but that’s all I can say for now."
Ostigard later chimed in and told him to "text me when everything is signed and sorted down in Arsenal," to which Gyokeres simply replied: "Yeah, yeah, sure."
Gyokeres told to snub Arsenal
Former Real Madrid midfielder Wesley Sneijder believes that Gyokeres' ideal next club would be Los Blancos rather than Arsenal, who do not appear to be a stylistic fit for the striker.
“You have to pick a team which works for your playing style. At the moment, maybe Real [should consider signing him]," he told The Metro. "If it allows Kylian Mbappe to move back to the left, then maybe it’s a perfect match.”
Barcelona not in for Gyokeres
Gyokeres has also been linked with a move to Barcelona in recent times, but the Blaugrana's sporting director Deco has ruled out a transfer due to the presence of Robert Lewandowski.
“I’m not going to talk about the transfer market here, because it’s not the right time. I came to talk about something else,” he told A Bola before revealing his admiration for Gyokeres.
“He’s a great player who has scored a lot of goals in recent years at Sporting, but at the moment we’re not looking for that position. We already have Lewandowski to play at number 9, so it’s not a position we’re looking for.”
