Celtic legend slams club for hosting Oasis gig on anniversary of European Cup triumph

Celtic legend Frank McAvennie believes the club has not taken into consideration the feelings of the supporters after an Oasis gig was confirmed for the night of the 60th anniversary of the club's famous 1967 European Cup win.

On 25 May, 1967, Celtic became the first British side to win the European Cup after defeating the mighty Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon. Sandro Mazzola put the Italian giants a goal up early on but the Hoops rallied and overturned the scoreline thanks to goals from Tommy Gemmell and Stevie Chalmers.

Jock Stein's team held on for the victory and Billy McNeill lifted the famous trophy on the steps of the Estadio Nacional in what has become one of the most iconic images in the history of the European Cup.

The players became known as the 'Lisbon Lions' and one of the stands at Celtic Park is named after the group of legends.

The club commemorates the achievement in most matches during the 67th minute and each year on the anniversary of the triumph. This year, however, there will be an Oasis gig.

Liam and Noel Gallagher announced Celtic Park as part of their summer tour in 2027 and they will play five nights at the stadium in the East End of Glasgow.

McAvennie, who played under McNeill when the Lisbon Lion became Celtic manager, thinks the decision to snub the anniversary for Oasis is wrong.

Speaking on the Let Me Be Frank podcast, McAvennie said: "It should mean everything to Celtic Football Club. But it obviously means nothing to Celtic. I'm really annoyed at that. I love Oasis, but they've got Oasis playing on the night of the 60th anniversary of the cup.

"Do they not read (the room)? Does the people running Celtic not have a clue what's going on? They had a 50th at the Hydro, Rod Stewart did it and it was a brilliant night. They've got to have a 60th. Are they going to try and sell tickets somewhere else when Oasis is on?

"Do you know what should have happened? They've got the stadium for five nights. What they should have done is said, 'Look, you're not getting it for the 25th because we're going to have something for the anniversary. How about you guys playing, like Rod Stewart did?'

"Could they not have done something like that? Noel Gallagher is a big fan of Celtic. I'm sure Liam and the boys would've got behind it. Do Celtic not think about the fans anymore? Celtic Football Club is the Lisbon Lions, let's be honest about it. We've all played under great managers and won Doubles and Trebles. But the Lisbon Lions are what put Celtic on the map."

After playing in Glasgow, Oasis will move on to Manchester, Munich, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Boston, Las Vegas, Slane Castle and Knebworth.

The last music group to play Celtic Park was Wet Wet Wet back in 1997.
