Szoboszlai at risk as Liverpool make move for Premier League’s best wonderkid
Liverpool have reportedly made a “serious move” to sign Tottenham Hotspur wonderkid Archie Gray this summer.
The England U21 midfielder, who scored during a 4-1 win over Moldova on Tuesday, has been one of Spurs’ only bright sparks during a dismal Premier League campaign, and his form has alerted multiple top clubs across Europe.
Manchester United and Real Madrid are among the teams to have been linked with a summer move for the 20-year-old, and Tottenham could face an uphill battle to retain his services ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Gray still has four years remaining on his current deal with the north London giants, however he is one of several players who could look to leave the club if they suffer a humiliating relegation down to the Championship this term.
The former Leeds United starlet was a rotation option under previous Spurs boss Thomas Frank, but he established himself as an integral player during Igor Tudor’s ill-fated spell in charge and he is expected to retain his place under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
However, Liverpool want to sign Gray this summer and they have already made “serious moves” to sign him, according to transfer reporter IndyKaila.
Analysis: Archie Gray could replace Dominik Szoboszlai at Liverpool
Gray has been regarded as one of England’s best talents for several years and data analytics experts SciSports believe he would be an excellent long-term signing for Liverpool.
While the Englishman may not immediately become a guaranteed starter if he joins Arne Slot’s side, his SciSkill potential rating of 132.2 suggests it wouldn’t be long before he is in the preferred starting XI at Anfield.
If he reaches his potential, SciSports believe that Gray will even become a better player than Liverpool fan favourite Dominik Szoboszlai. In fact, only Florian Wirtz (144.0) and Ryan Gravenberch (139.1) have a higher potential rating than Gray, and those three players could feasibly form a formidable midfield trio for the next decade if Liverpool are able to sign the England wonderkid.
Meanwhile, Gray’s potential SciSkill rating of 132.2 is the best of any current Premier League player aged 20 or under. He is regarded as the most promising youngster in the entire division - ahead of Estevao Willian, Kobbie Mainoo and countless others - and Liverpool’s interest is therefore no surprise.
