Cristiano Ronaldo escalates Jorge Jesus spat with remarkable Portugal statement
Al-Nassr megastar Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that his relationship with Portugal manager Jorge Jesus is broken after he prematurely departed the national team camp.
The 41-year-old's ailing international career hit a new low last week when he unexpectedly returned to Saudi Arabia ahead of Portugal's win over Denmark.
The legendary forward had been benched by new manager Jorge Jesus in the previous match against Norway and did not get on the pitch despite warming up extensively. The fallout from this seemingly innocuous situation has been immense.
Feeling disrespected and humiliated by the coach, he packed his bags and left the national team camp, sparking huge backlash against his former Al-Nassr manager, who was initially viewed as a "Ronaldo appointment."
After a disappointing World Cup, many felt that this could be the end of Ronaldo's incredible Portugal career. He is his country's greatest-ever player, and it shouldn't end like this. He seems to agree.
Ronaldo breaks his silence
Shortly after his departure, Ronaldo posted on social media that he would lift the lid on what had happened in due time, and that time has now come, with the 41-year-old releasing a remarkable 1,924-word statement.
In it, Ronaldo announced that this isn't the end of the road just yet and that he would still have the chance to say "farewell" to the Portuguese fans properly. However, he also confirmed that his rift with Jesus is seemingly beyond repair.
Ronaldo kicks off his statement by revealing that he considered retiring from international football after Portugal's disappointing World Cup exit and his own underwhelming contribution.
"As promised, I decided to recount, in the first person and directly, the circumstances surrounding the final stage of the National Team's journey," Ronaldo wrote.
"After the 2026 World Cup, I prepared a letter to the Portuguese people, which I still keep, with the words I want to address to them when I definitively leave our team.
"At the end of the competition, right on the return flight from the United States, the President of the Federation (FPF) asked and insisted that I reconsider my decision to leave because the FPF wanted me to continue."
The former Man Utd and Real Madrid star then claimed that he was supportive of Jesus' appointment as national team boss. Last season, the 72-year-old finally ended Ronaldo's trophy drought in Saudi Arabia after winning the Saudi Pro League with Al-Nassr.
"Immediately afterwards, he [the president] asked for my opinion on the name of the current national team coach, which he was considering, along with other names that he did not reveal to me," Ronaldo asserted.
"I replied to the President of the Federation that, in my opinion, it would be the right choice. Therefore, on the day the current coach was introduced, I was genuinely happy with the choice. It was the right option, as the results are proving.
"A few days later, I received my first call from the new national team coach saying he would like to meet with me in person. I said yes, and we scheduled it for the end of my vacation.
"We met at the City of Football where my club was holding its pre-season training camp. The coach told me that day that he was counting on me and that my presence was fundamental to his project."
Jesus "breaks his word"
However, Jesus' idea on how to use Ronaldo did not thrill the Portugal captain: "He presented me with a plan for my participation right there. He told me that I would play the first and last games and that, for reasons of physical management, he would always make three or four substitutions per game.
"At that point, he suggested that I not travel with the national team to Norway and Denmark. He proposed that I play the first game and stay in Portugal, then rejoin them before the game at the Dragao stadium [in Porto].
"I immediately refused this offer. It seemed obvious to me that I couldn't accept it. Not playing the games abroad would mean I would stop captaining our team. That privilege of staying in Portugal wouldn't set a good example.
"The coach ended up agreeing with my analysis. This conversation was attended by Simao Coutinho, Sporting Director of Al-Nassr, the person to whom the current national team coach reported throughout last season and one of those responsible for his signing by the club in 2025.
"On the eve of the training camp, the coach came to my house in Lisbon for another conversation with me, at his request. The conversation was calm, and all the principles agreed upon in August were upheld.
"I played in the Alvalade game [against Wales], and despite being substituted, I didn't cause any problems. I personally placed the captain's armband on Bruno Fernandes, never imagining that I might be taking my last steps as an athlete and captain of the National Team. The important thing about that day, for me, was our victory. Winning is always good, but winning in Portugal and for my country is even better."
Ahead of the Norway game, Ronaldo claims that he received a strange request from Jesus. "At lunchtime on the day of the game in Norway, an assistant to the national team coach came to the table where the group was having lunch and informed me that the coach wanted to speak with me.
"To my absolute surprise, the coach asked me if I was okay to play 30 minutes. I was totally focused on my physical recovery, integrated with my teammates as always, and thinking that I wouldn't play that day. No problem at all.
"This request was something outside my physical recovery and training plan - because I was only going to play on the 4th [of October] at Dragao - but obviously I said yes. He replied that I should be prepared because I would play for 30 minutes.
"The rest is history. I warmed up since halftime, watched the minutes tick by, and wasn't called upon." Ronaldo concludes: "The coach had broken his word to me."

What happened next
Ronaldo immediately left the scene, which he now regrets. "At the end of the game, I just wanted it all to end with a victory and to be alone. I didn't go to greet the fans. A mistake that is solely my responsibility and that shouldn't have happened.
"I apologise to the Portuguese people who supported us intensely there, I apologise to the fans, and I apologise to those who, without being Portuguese, may have travelled there to see me and whom I may have disappointed.
"After 48 hours, we had a conversation: me, the coach and Simao Coutinho, since he had been the one who followed our conversations in August. It was a profound moment, very direct, without any kind of filter.
"We agreed that there was only one way to end this 'case': that the coach should repeat what he had just told me there in private, in the presence of Simao Coutinho, but in the press room."
Ronaldo then reveals that he wanted Jesus to publicly promise that he would never again make him warm up if he didn't plan to use him.
"The agreement was simple: the coach would begin the press conference with this topic, seeking to close the matter by telling the truth. He would say that I never asked to play any minutes, that it was the coach, and no one else, who proposed the plan for this training camp, and that it was a mistake to have me warm up only to not play, and that if it happened again, I wouldn't do it.
"We ended that meeting with the coach asking me for a hug, promising me that he would say in the press conference what he had just told me and that the matter was resolved. I wouldn't play in Denmark, and I would play in the Porto game. All this in the presence of Simao Coutinho, as always."
Then, the situation escalated. "At the coach's request, a video conference meeting then took place between him, Simao Coutinho, and Tiago Craveiro, which summarised what we had discussed.
"A short document was produced, which I personally validated, and, with my knowledge, it was delivered to the manager, just as he had requested.
"The conference was exactly as expected: the attitude had nothing to do with our meeting; I heard expressions and aggression that I don't think were warranted, an attitude of 'I want, I can and I command' that I've never even remotely heard from privately the day before.
"The points I validated [on the document] were as follows:
'I [Jorge Jesus] think it's important, especially since it's the truth, to clarify a few things before talking about Denmark:
'1. I personally proposed a plan to Cristiano, without anyone else, for him this sporting season with the National Team. It was a long and very good conversation.
'2. I know how much he lives and loves the National Team and the weight it has in the world, even more so, the weight and positive influence it has had on the National Team for 24 consecutive years.
'3. The plan I proposed to Cristiano was accepted.
'4. He never questioned my choices. He was exemplary, loyal, and professional.
'5. The Norway game wasn't included in the plan I had drawn up for him. However, I felt he had recovered physically from the first game and I told him I might have to use him. Cristiano agreed.
'6. I made a mistake by having someone of Pele or Maradona's stature warm up only to then not put him in the game. If it were today, I wouldn't do it.
'7. To conclude the matter: I want Cristiano in the National Team. In fact, I don't just want him a little, I want him a lot. Fortunately, he also believes in me. He believed in me at Al-Nassr and here as well.
'8. Regarding not greeting the fans. We've already talked about that. Someone who plays over 230 games for the national team doesn't expect lessons in love for Portugal from me. It was a moment of frustration that doesn't erase anything. He's the player who gives the most autographs, takes the most selfies, and shows the most affection to the fans. Let's not invent problems where they don't exist. When we're not happy, we react. That's all.'"
Ronaldo quits
Jesus, of course, did not do as Ronaldo ordered, prompting the 41-year-old to leave. "None of these notes said that the coach had even apologised to me. It was the second time he had broken his word.
"I decided to quit the camp without waiting for any more broken promises. For me, the truth is still the most important thing in relationships between people. No matter how much it hurts, I need to be told the truth.
"Moreover, in a conversation I had with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation and the National Team Coach on the morning of that press conference, which he can surely confirm, I reaffirmed that if they didn't want me there, they should just tell me.
"They only needed to be frank with me. I would accept that and promised that we would prepare something beautiful, as I dream it will happen, and nobody would be angry.
"I remember it like it was yesterday. They answered in unison, 'No.' That my place was on the National Team.
"Never, at any point in my almost 25-year career, have I interfered in any technical or tactical decision made by any coach or national team manager. I accept, for better or worse, what they propose to do. I respect the decision, and when they break their word, I feel that my place is not there.
"I also owe an apology to my teammates for abandoning the training camp. Despite the complete breach of trust in the coach's word, as anyone who witnessed these conversations can attest, I shouldn't have done it. The responsibility is solely mine.
"I apologise to the Portuguese people once again, but breaking my trust has a defining impact on me. I felt that, from that point on, my continued presence would only harm the work group, and I did what I always said I would do if I didn't feel useful: I packed my bags and left.
"The consequences of my actions must be evaluated and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation. I believe the punishment should not be mitigated. I am not just any player; I am the team captain, and that constitutes an aggravating factor.
"I have already apologised, but I know that actions must have consequences. Anyone involved in football, as I am, knows that, regardless of individual status, the rules are the same for everyone.
"In this regard, I have heard a lot of talk about farewell matches, that I need to have a dignified farewell, and that the Federation wants to give me that opportunity.
"I learned in life, often when hungry and with nothing to eat, that nobody gives anything to anybody. I can promise all my fans, naturally and especially all the Portuguese fans, that we will play one or more farewell matches; there will be time for that.
"But when I think about the national team, what I really think about is competing. That's what I thought about the day I received the news of my father's death.
"I was in training camp with our national team, and I decided to stay there until the game the next day was over. I did for the country what I would never do for any club.
"Therefore, if I am physically fit, playing for my club, and hopefully scoring goals, after serving the suspension that will be imposed on me, I will be available, as I have always been until now, to compete and win for our National Team.
"This is, believe me, the purest truth. Cristiano Ronaldo. October 6, 2026."
