Fabrizio Romano Transfer News: Carrick sack latest, Alvarez update, Kane contract talks

Football news expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on several major transfer stories, including the latest on Michael Carrick, Julian Alvarez and Harry Kane.
Juventus done deal and Giorgio Scalvini contract
Juventus have finalised a deal to sign former Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto, while Giorgio Scalvini has committed his future to Atalanta.
“Today Juventus have completed the signing of their new back-up goalkeeper,” Romano told his YouTube channel.
“Kamil Grabara suffered a knee injury and that's why he's no longer available. The first goalkeeper is Vicario from Tottenham. The second is Grabara, but Grabara got injured and so Juventus have signed Neto, the Brazilian goalkeeper, arriving today in Turin to complete his move on a one-year contract to Juventus as a free agent.”
Romano added: “And then also Giorgio Scalvini. Scalvini was part of the conversation over the recent months about Newcastle. Is he going to Newcastle or not? The reality is that Newcastle were never close to signing Scalvini in the summer transfer window. He was not for sale for Atalanta and also Newcastle had different ideas.
“Scalvini is wanted by several clubs around Europe and I would keep a close eye on Scalvini maybe for summer 2027, but for now Scalvini signs a new contract at Atalanta and that's important news because the deal has been signed today. Scalvini stays again at Atalanta.”
Michael Carrick update
Michael Carrick has been heavily linked with a Manchester United exit after just one win in their last five matches, but Romano has poured cold water on reports claiming that talks with a replacement are ongoing.
“Many of you keep asking me, what's the situation with Carrick? Is Carrick in danger? What's going on with Carrick? And on the other side, many of you are asking me if there is a chance of Man Utd already contacting or approaching some managers. My answer is clear, guys,” Romano said.
“As of today, Man Utd have not made any movement to contact other coaches. Man Utd are not in direct negotiation or in direct conversation with coaches or with their representatives. So, at the moment, it is completely quiet and will stay quiet for the next weeks and, they hope, months.
“We are in a results business and so results are always needed, but Man Utd maintain their confidence in Michael Carrick as a club. Obviously, they cannot be happy, everyone at the club, Carrick himself, everyone, with the recent results, but Man Utd believe that with some time, balance is arriving. The midfield was completely rebuilt over the summer. So when you add three new players in a key position like the midfield, it sometimes needs to create that chemistry and so Man Utd are working on that.
“So they maintain their confidence in Carrick. That's Man Utd's position on Carrick. Then obviously, again, results are needed to make sure this is going to work long term. But at the moment Man Utd maintain their confidence also because, and I think this is an important point, at the club they believe that also the players are with the coach.
“At the club they believe that compared to other situations Man Utd had in the recent past, where some players were not so happy with the coach, in this case they believe the large majority of the players are absolutely backing and supporting the ideas of Michael Carrick.”
Lennart Karl to Real Madrid?
Bayern Munich wonderkid Lennart Karl is expected to remain at the Allianz Arena for the foreseeable future, however rumours have suggested he could join Real Madrid.
“There have been some rumours coming out of Spain, I think about Lennart Karl and Real Madrid. These stories will always be around since Lennart Karl, almost one year ago, said that he dreams of one day becoming a Real Madrid player. Since that moment, we have had rumours everywhere about Lennart Karl and Real Madrid,” Romano said.
“The reality is that there is nothing really in it at this stage. No talks, no conversations. I can guarantee Lennart Karl is 100% focused on Bayern. He wants to be back at the highest level possible. He's very young, so obviously working hard to get to the best level possible, but complete focus on Bayern for Lennart Karl. That's the status of the story. That's the status of the situation.
“Then if you ask me about Real Madrid, obviously people at Real Madrid are delighted to hear that a player like Lennart Karl has this dream one day to go to Real Madrid. You can only be happy, but that's it. That's a very basic and normal conversation on Bayern.”
Harry Kane contract talks
Harry Kane has also been tipped to leave Bayern, but he is now on the verge of signing a new deal with Vincent Kompany’s side instead.
“For Harry Kane, the negotiations and talks between Harry Kane, his brother Charlie and Bayern over a new deal are proceeding very well,” Romano confirmed.
“The agreement is very close between Harry Kane and Bayern. It's about the length of the contract, how many years, how to sort that clause Harry Kane had in his contract for a Premier League return, for total unmatched rights. So they have something to clarify in terms of clauses, in terms of length of the contract, but already being almost there financially.
“I think it's big news for Bayern. So really, really getting closer. I think it's happening. It's very close. Again, they need to clarify these points and we will keep you updated on that and then we will see what's going to happen in that situation.”
Julian Alvarez to Barcelona latest
Finally, Romano provided a clear update on Barcelona’s pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez following their failure to sign him over the summer.
“I also wanted to add something more when we talk about players regarding the situation of Julian Alvarez, because Deco, Barcelona director, spoke in Portugal over the recent days and wanted to clarify something on the situation of Julian Alvarez,” Romano said.
“And I think it's absolutely important he did that because he said it already in an interview 10 days ago, speaking in Spain, he explained the process of the story about the bid, about what they did in terms of strategy and rejecting, so they could say everything. Then in this new interview he said it's the past now. Julian's story is the past and the message is strong because obviously he's telling everyone that Barcelona are absolutely happy and delighted with the squad they have and that's the reality.
“Barcelona consider Gabriel Jesus an excellent addition in terms of skills, in terms of qualities. Barcelona believe that Raphinha's number nine is having an incredible start to the season and they are convinced this can last the whole season. So Barcelona are very happy with the squad they have, with the strategy they had.
“Then when Deco says Julian is the past, he means now we had the whole summer, May, June, July, August, talking about Alvarez. Stop. Let's focus on this season. Let's focus on these players, let's focus on this squad. Barcelona believe they built a top, top team and Barcelona don't want any more distraction about that.
“So that's why he says it's the past. It doesn't mean that Barcelona completely forgot or completely eliminated the name of Julian Alvarez from their mind. That's not the case. It's just that Deco is saying let's focus on this season for Barca, for Atletico, for Julian. What Cerezo said a couple of weeks ago, let Julian play football. Stop with the story.
“So that's the message sent by Deco. Then obviously Barca are delighted with the squad they have and this is how they close the circle of this year 2026. What's going to happen in the near future, 2027? We will see. But that's the message of Deco because he wants absolutely everyone to focus on this squad this season.”
