Liverpool have been told to re-sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah next summer amid growing transfer interest in the England international.

Quansah, 23, left Anfield to join Leverkusen on a permanent deal last year and following an encouraging debut campaign in Germany, he was a surprise inclusion in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America.

The versatile defender, who can play at right-back or centre-back, has now established himself as a key member of Thomas Tuchel’s squad at international level and his form for Leverkusen has attracted substantial transfer interest in recent weeks.

It’s understood that Arsenal lodged a failed bid for his services over the summer, while Chelsea and Real Madrid have both joined the race to secure his signature in 2027 as they look to bolster their defensive roster.

However, a return to Liverpool remains a strong possibility thanks to a €65 million buy-back clause and concerns over the long-term future of club captain Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk’s current contract at Anfield is due to expire next summer and former Reds striker John Aldridge believes that Iraola should bring Quansah back to the club if the Dutchman departs.

Liverpool urged to complete Jarell Quansah deal

“You know what I’d do? I’d be looking to bring back Jarell Quansah,” Aldridge told The Liverpool Echo. “There’s a £56m (€65m) buyback option on him and, for me, it’s a no-brainer. Next season, if Virgil goes, you’re looking at it and we could have [Ronald] Araujo, [Jeremy] Jacquet, [Giovanni] Leoni and Quansah. That’s four great options.

“Arne Slot didn’t fancy Quansah after that first game of the [2024/25] season against Ipswich. It showed as he didn’t really play him, didn’t really fancy him, but he’s proved Arne wrong.

“He’s gone to Leverkusen and is doing really well. He’s playing well for England. For me, you need four really good centre-halves.

“It’s a no-brainer to get Quansah back next year. Absolutely, 100%. 100%, man. As long as he wants to come. He’s a Warrington lad. I hope he’s a Liverpudlian, and if that’s the case, there’s no reason not to go and get him.

“Liverpool has the buyback. If they want him, they have to go and get him. And then next year, centre-halves-wise, we’d be really solid.”

Quansah has made 50 appearances for Leverkusen since his arrival from Liverpool, scoring five goals, and his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at €46.3m.
