Arteta reveals injury verdict for forgotten summer signing after mystery absence
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed the potential timeline surrounding the return to action of a summer signing who has had a frustrating start to life in North London.
The Gunners have been beset by injury problems in the early weeks of the season. Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, William Saliba, Martin Odegaard and now Noni Madueke are all important players who have missed much of the early part of the season.
With these problems grabbing the headlines, the situation of Piero Hincapie has been overlooked. The 23-year-old has managed only one minute of action since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen and was a surprise absentee from the squad to face Manchester City on Sunday.
Having undergone groin surgery this summer, there had been fears that the Ecuador international had suffered a significant problem, particularly as the Gunners had been so secretive about the issue.
Arteta has now confirmed the severity of Hincapie’s injury, with the Arsenal manager confident that it’s not too much to worry about.
“He picked up a little groin injury. We’ll have to assess him again in the next few days to see how he goes” Arteta said.
“There’s been a change of load and he didn’t really have a pre-season after the surgery that he had. We’ll have to see in the next week or so how he is. There’s no timeframe - I think it will be a short time.”
Hincapie faces new setback
Hincapie faces a battle to get minutes at Arsenal this season after Cristhian Mosquera made a superb start alongside Gabriel in deputising for the injured Saliba.
Should he successfully impose himself at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners possess an option to buy for €51.5 million (£45m) – a deal that would also grant Bayer Leverkusen a 10% sell-on clause.
There is a danger of Hincapie becoming something of a forgotten man at Arsenal, though. Should his niggling groin problem persist, it will act as a red flag for the North London club, who already have Saliba, Gabriel and now Mosquera ahead of him in the pecking order.
