Benjamin Sesko made a mistake by joining Manchester United over Newcastle, according to Slovenian pundit Tine Zupan.

The towering striker was at the heart of a massive transfer tussle between the Red Devils and the Magpies this summer. Newcastle looked to be closing in on his signing, but Sesko had his heart set on joining Man Utd and ultimately rebuffed the St. James' Park club.

He ended up moving to Man Utd in a sizeable deal that can rise to €85 million, but he has so far struggled to impress. Given the club's recent history of big-money flops, there are already fears that he is another Rasmus Hojlund.

Having missed out on Sesko and a whole host of other targets - including Man Utd signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo - Newcastle ended up bringing in Nick Woltemade in a similarly overpriced deal, potentially paying up to €90m for him.

According to Tine Zupan, who is a pundit in Sesko's native Slovenia, the 22-year-old made a mistake by turning down Newcastle. Worryingly for Man Utd, Zupan does not believe that Eddie Howe will have any regrets over missing out on Sesko.

Sesko better suited to Newcastle

Speaking on the Vala 202 podcast, the Premier League commentator said: “I think Newcastle have a much better style of play for Sesko's characteristics. Newcastle’s style is a better reflection of what he was used to in Leipzig.

"They are an extremely direct team, very fast, looking for a different way to score than Man Utd. We saw a big problem with Rasmus Hojlund last season, who was the previous striker before Sesko.

"His shot-on-target statistics were terrible. He had games and games when he didn’t get a shot, and now we see it with Sesko. Neither Man Utd nor Arsenal [his other summer suitors] have the ideal game for Sesko.

"Arsenal, because they are dominant, and Sesko needs space for his game. At United, for the first time this season, we are seeing the beginnings of [Ruben] Amorim’s game, which is significantly more possession-oriented than last season.

"Sesko would be better suited to Newcastle, but I’m not sure if it would be better for Newcastle to have Sesko instead of Woltemade. At the moment, I think Woltemade is more ready for what he has to do.”
