Chelsea announce biggest financial loss in Premier League history

Chelsea have broken the record for the biggest financial loss in Premier League history after announcing their financial figures for the 2024/25 season.

The Blues announced a pre-tax loss of £262.4 million (€301m) which is the largest annual loss ever in English football, eclipsing the £197.5m (€226.5m) figure posted by Manchester City after the 2010/11 campaign.

Having posted a profit of £128.4m (€147.3m) in the previous year’s accounts – a figure boosted by the sale of the women’s team to a subsidiary company of the owners – Chelsea said the fresh losses were in part due to increased operation costs.

The club’s revenue was £490.9m, which is the second-highest in Chelsea’s history and includes some of the funds earned from the Club World Cup victory last summer as well as the Europa Conference League prize money.

Chelsea insist they remain compliant with the Premier League’s PSR rules despite the losses, with UEFA having fined the club £26.7m at the start of the season for breaching squad-cost ratio rules.

The BBC report that the losses also include fines, such as the £10.75m sanction by the Premier League relating to agent payments made under the ownership of Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea’s BlueCo owners, led by Todd Boehly, have spent more than €1.5 billion on players since their takeover in 2022 – the highest amount of any side in world football during that time.

Figures also revealed this week that Chelsea spent £65.1m on agent fees in the past year, nearly £27m more than any other Premier League club.

While Chelsea expect their financial results to improve next year due to their return to Champions League football this season, Liam Rosenior’s side are in danger of missing out on playing in Europe’s top competition for the upcoming season, which would dent future revenues.

Chelsea are also believed to be expecting a financial rather than a sporting sanction from the FA for breaches of its rules under the Abramovich ownership, which saw the club handed a suspended transfer ban last month.
