Football news expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on several major transfer stories ahead of this summer, including the latest on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Casemiro and Barcelona.

Barcelona’s transfer plans

Barcelona have been unable to spend huge sums on players in recent years, but Romano has confirmed that a central defender will be their priority this summer.

“So many important developments are taking place, including the plans of several clubs, with Barcelona among them. Joan Laporta has won the presidential elections, securing another five years in charge,” Romano said in his latest YouTube video.

“What this means is continuity - Barcelona will remain under the current structure. Deco will continue as sporting director, a role considered absolutely crucial, while Joao Amaral will remain a key figure within the scouting department.

“Barcelona have invested heavily in young talents from abroad to strengthen the academy and build for the future, and this strategy will continue. Hansi Flick has already confirmed his commitment to the project, and he will remain as Barcelona manager, ensuring stability and progression.

“One of the main priorities for Barcelona will be signing a centre-back. They are also looking at the possibility of adding a striker, although this will depend on the available budget and market opportunities. However, in defence, the direction is very clear - Barcelona will go for a defender in the summer transfer window.”

Arsenal target contract extensions

Arsenal have prioritised finalising contract extensions with their best players over the past few months and Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice are the next in line for fresh terms, as per Romano.

“Arsenal are actively working on several contract situations while continuing their push to compete for major honours,” he revealed. “The club recently secured a new deal for Bukayo Saka earlier this year, which is seen as a very important step.

“Now, attention turns to two more players. Negotiations are ongoing for Jurrien Timber, who is highly valued for his professionalism, development and importance to Mikel Arteta’s system. The feeling is very positive, and a new contract is getting closer.

“In addition, discussions have already begun regarding a new deal for Declan Rice. As previously reported, Arsenal have been working on this since 2025, and talks are now progressing well. Contacts between the club and the player’s camp are concrete, and there is strong optimism that Rice will sign a new contract on improved terms, including a higher salary, which reflects his importance to the project.

“While negotiations are not yet at the final stages, both parties expect the situation to be resolved in the coming months, with a very positive feeling surrounding the process.”

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Arsenal?

Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks, with Arsenal among his suitors, but a deal will not take place this summer.

“There have also been many questions regarding reports linking Khvicha Kvaratskhelia with a move to Arsenal. What can be confirmed is that Paris Saint-Germain consider him an absolutely crucial player,” Romano said.

“The club have no intention of letting him leave after just over a year, and internally he is viewed as untouchable. Paris Saint-Germain are not open to negotiations for his departure in the upcoming summer transfer window.

“Arsenal are expected to sign at least one attacking player, possibly two, depending on outgoings and market opportunities. Kvaratskhelia would be an ideal fit in terms of profile and quality, and arguably a missing piece in the current squad.

“However, despite admiration for the player, the message from Paris Saint-Germain is very clear - they do not intend to consider any exit for him this summer.”

Casemiro future update

Casemiro has confirmed that he will leave Man Utd when his contract expires this summer and despite rumours suggesting he could be offered a new deal, Romano has admitted that he is expected to depart as things stand.

The transfer expert said: “There have been many questions about whether Man Utd could reconsider their position and offer him a new contract, potentially keeping him at the club for another season, especially if Champions League qualification is secured.

“As of now, nothing has changed. While future decisions cannot be predicted, the current stance from Man Utd is that there are no ongoing negotiations over a new deal.

Casemiro remains on a significant contract, with his salary and age both important factors in the club’s long-term planning.

“The club are very pleased with his performances and recognise his importance, as well as his status as one of the best midfielders of his generation. However, there has been no indication of a shift towards extending his stay.

“At present, Casemiro has not signed with any other club and is evaluating his options. Man Utd have not taken steps to alter the situation, and this remains the current position.”

JJ Gabriel latest

Finally, Romano has clarified Man Utd’s plan for talented academy starlet JJ Gabriel.

“Man Utd are also extremely excited about one of their brightest young prospects, JJ Gabriel, who is regarded internally as a standout talent,” Romano confirmed.

“At just 15 years old, and turning 16 in October, he is already considered one of the most promising young players in Europe, and potentially worldwide within his age group.

“Naturally, there is no pressure being placed on him at this stage, as there is still significant development required before reaching the highest level. However, in terms of raw talent and potential, the belief within the club is very strong.

“Much like Arsenal have developed an exceptional young talent in Max Dowman, Man Utd hope JJ Gabriel can follow a similar path. He is viewed as a major part of the club’s future plans and a player with the potential to become something truly special.”
