Ruben Amorim has made formations the major talking point at Manchester United over the course of his difficult first year at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese has stuck staunchly by his 3-4-3, claiming that even an intervention from the Pope would not see him move away from his favoured system.

It’s an approach that has the Old Trafford club in turmoil. Sitting 14th in the Premier League ahead of the weekend’s matches, Amorim is under more pressure than ever to get things right.

While esteemed journalist David Ornstein has claimed that much of this is simply media noise, it’s clear that United’s results need to pick up – and soon.

One man who is in contention to replace Amorim should he leave Man Utd is Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, who has achieved great things at the Selhurst Park side on a fraction of the resources on offer at Old Trafford.

What formation does Oliver Glasner play?

Speaking to Sky Sports, he was asked about his preferred formation and gave an answer that will be music to the ears of those frustrated by Amorim’s insistence on playing just one way.

Indeed, the Austrian’s answer positioned him opposite to the current Man Utd boss, willing to adapt to the players he has in front of him rather than force stars into roles they are not suited to.

Glasner said: “The system? It must fit the players. There is too much discussion about the system. The system is not important. Habits are important, the patterns and how you want your players to behave on the pitch. That is much more important.

“In my career I have played every single system. got promoted in Austria with a 4-4-2, then we switched to a 3-4-3. In Wolfsburg, we reached the Champions League with a 4-2-3-1. In Frankfurt, they played with three at the back before and it fit the squad.

“I always look at what system might suit the players we have best. My favourite system is 4-4-2 but do we have the right players for this? We are talking much more about our habits than the system. The system is very fluid.

“It's important the players know what we want to do and this is what decides about being successful or not.”

For many Man Utd fans, this would be the perfect interview answer and would put Glasner somewhere towards the top of the list should Amorim ultimately leave.
