Ruben Amorim’s future has been discussed at length by highly respected football transfer news insider David Ornstein, who has provided a surprising update on the Manchester United manager.

It’s been another tough week for the Portuguese in the wake of a 3-1 loss to Brentford in the Premier League last weekend. The manner of the defeat has piled pressure onto Amorim, whose side sit 14th in the table.

In the wake of that reverse, there has been fresh media speculation regarding who might take over from the former Sporting CP boss.

But despite all the adverse results, Ornstein claims that there is not currently any prospect of the coach losing his job.

“Ruben Amorim is under major pressure, but I think most of the pressure is being applied on him by himself as well as being Manchester United manager,” Ornstein told NBC Sports.

“But Man Utd themselves, as I understand it, they’re not planning to sack him. And I don’t think he’s planning to walk away from this. Last season, I think he really felt the strain and people I speak to say that he was questioning whether he could succeed there.

“Incrementally, there is a bit of improvement felt, however small. But it is still early.

“Sir Jim Ratcliffe, as minority owner but with sporting control. He’s at the heart of this. Omar Berrada as chief executive, Jason Wilcox as technical director, there’s a lot riding on this decision for them because they appointed him and placed great faith in his system.

“Results will need to improve, we can’t get away from that. We know how this industry operates.”

What if Man Utd lose again?

Ornstein went on to claim that if United were to lose to Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday, Amorim’s position is still likely to be safe.

He explained: “There’s no guarantee that if they were to lose against Sunderland that they would sack him. In fact, I don’t think they would, as long as it wasn’t too severe. They’ve got some games after the international break that would be a truer test.

“Of course it would be expensive to get rid of him, but I don’t think money will be at the heart of this decision. It’ll be a football decision.

“People have talked about shortlists. I don’t know if there’s a shortlist to replace him. Of course, Man Utd will always be looking at options and aware of their options, whether it’s on an interim basis or a longer basis or even after the World Cup in 2026. But I’m assured that Gareth Southgate is not in the frame for the Manchester United job should it become available.

“The players are mainly with him, they believe in what he’s doing, but there’s an acceptance that they’re not any longer doing what they’ve been set up to do with him. There’s a lot of talk about the system but that’s not seen as the core issue. The need for a No.6 was perhaps more pressing than the No.9 in the summer and what’s happening with Kobbie Mainoo? That’s maybe one to watch for January. The goalkeeping situation – we’ve not seen Senne Lammens just yet.

“United need to get winning quickly, so does Amorim.”
