Liverpool 'make contact' to beat Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to WORLD CLASS Konate replacement
Liverpool have emerged as serious contenders for one of the most coveted defenders on the market next summer after reportedly already making contact to sign the player.
The Reds are expected to make major changes to their backline as Ibrahima Konate’s contract winds down and the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain continue to take interest in the Frenchman.
With Liverpool’s top target Marc Guehi also out of contract next summer and attracting attention from a number of top sides, the Reds have explored a number of alternative options such as Nico Schlotterbeck.
According to BILD, Schlotterbeck has hesitated on signing an extension to his deal at Dortmund, which ends in 2027, and he is aiming to move to a side capable of competing for titles while also improving his wages.
Liverpool are believed to even be considering a move this January for Schlotterbeck after seeing summer signing Giovanni Leoni suffer a cruciate ligament injury last month.
However, with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester City also credited with an interest, Liverpool are said to have held initial talks with Schloterbeck’s reprensentatives in the hopes that their quick action can move them ahead of their rivals.
Liverpool set for major defensive investment
Having spent more than €350 million on attackers this summer, Liverpool will focus on rejuvenating their backline next year, particularly after seeing their move for Guehi collapse on deadline day.
Guehi remains a major target for Arne Slot but Liverpool are aware that the Crystal Palace captain’s availability on a free transfer could see them outmuscled by other clubs.
Liverpool have kept just two clean sheets in their seven Premier League games so far this season and the uncertainty surrounding Konate’s future has seemingly taken a toll on the 26-year-old’s form.
With captain Virgil van Dijk also not getting any younger, Liverpool are desperate to sign a defender sooner rather than later, which could see the interest in Schlotterbeck intensified in the coming months.
