Liverpool confident of striking major deal - but are they making a mistake?
Liverpool are confident that Ibrahima Konate will sign a contract extension, according to French media.
The 26-year-old's terms expire in 2026, and discussions over a new deal have been unsatisfactory so far. Konate and Liverpool looked to be on the verge of reaching an agreement in 2024, but the talks have been stalling since.
This has allowed Real Madrid to register their interest in the France international with a view to agreeing a pre-contract with him in January. However, L'Equipe now reports that Liverpool are 'confident' that Konate will stay at Anfield.
The French publication claims that Liverpool submitted their latest offer two weeks ago and that there is optimism that common ground will eventually be found.
However, Konate's recent performances have raised doubts about whether Liverpool should give him what he is demanding. With the exception of a few games, the centre-back has cut a hugely unconvincing figure this term.
Should Liverpool upgrade on Konate?
Even when he was playing well alongside Virgil van Dijk last campaign, Konate had the odd moment of madness. This season, he has been almost unrecognisable, frequently getting bullied by strikers and proving to be a liability for the Reds.
After a horror showing against Crystal Palace at the weekend, Konate again failed to impress against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday. The Athletic's Liverpool correspondent James Pearce described the defender as 'erratic' after the game and stated that he has 'regressed alarmingly.'
Of course, it would be a positive if Liverpool could prevent Konate from walking away for free, but losing him won't be seen as the end of the world. Indeed, even if he were to extend, signing an upgrade should be a priority for the Anfield club.
While Liverpool's current problems run deeper than just the defence, their failure to sign Marc Guehi in the summer - admittedly, for reasons beyond their control - is coming back to bite them in a major way.
