Arsenal to SACK Mikel Arteta if…
Arsenal will sack Mikel Arteta if they don't win the Premier League this season.
That is according to Gunners legend Robert Pires, who believes that the Arsenal board won't tolerate another season with no silverware.
Arteta has now been manager of Arsenal for almost six years but during that time he has only won an FA Cup and two Community Shields. Indeed, two of these trophies arrived in 2020, meaning Arsenal have only picked up one minor trophy in the last five years under Arteta.
Arsenal have been performing well consistently in the Premier League but have finished runners-up for three seasons in a row, unable to get over the line.
This summer Arsenal spent heavily on new players, splashing out €293 million on the likes of Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapie and Christian Norgaard.
And former Arsenal star Robert Pires, who was part of the Invincibles squad who won the club's last Premier League title in 2004, believes it is last chance saloon for Arteta this season.
What did Pires say?
“In my opinion, if Arsenal don’t win a trophy this year, the management will consider finding another coach," Pires told Foot Mercato.
“He’s been there for five years and unfortunately, the title has eluded him. What’s important for the fans is the championship.
“Money was spent in the summer transfer window. He made certain demands, which were met by the Arsenal board.
“If Arsenal don’t win the championship, I think there will definitely be a change on the bench.
“It’s not going to be easy because you have Liverpool, you have Man City who are there, Chelsea won’t be far behind. But I think Arsenal holds the cards and have the players to win the title.”
Arsenal have made a positive start to the current season, despite a tough run of fixtures, and their 2-1 win at Newcastle on Sunday means they are only two points off Liverpool at the top of the table.
