William Saliba signs Arsenal contract extension
William Saliba has officially signed his new contract at Arsenal, according to reliable journalist Fabrice Hawkins.
The France international has been the subject of intense transfer speculation for over a year due to Real Madrid's well-documented appreciation of him. Saliba has established himself as one of the world's best, and Los Blancos have made him a priority target.
With his contract expiring in 2027, Real Madrid believed that a transfer in 2026 could be possible as Arsenal would have had to sell to avoid losing him for free. They hoped to use their nigh on irresistible pull to convince the centre-back to snub any extension offers from the Gunners.
However, Saliba has shown that players can resist Real Madrid's advances. In recent weeks, it has become increasingly clear that his long-term future lies at the Emirates, not at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Talks between Saliba and Arsenal over a new long-term contract reached an advanced stage earlier this month, and a full agreement was reported on 25 September.
Saliba signs new Arsenal contract
According to the reliable French journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Saliba officially signed his new contract with Arsenal on Monday evening, meaning that he is now tied to the club until 2031.
Saliba is believed to have become one of Arsenal's best-paid players to reflect his status as a world-class defender and a vitally important cog in Mikel Arteta's side.
His extension means that Real Madrid will have to move on to different targets, with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate set to be pursued in the winter. He will be a free agent next summer and can agree a pre-contract in January.
Last Friday, Arteta all but confirmed that Saliba was set to stay in North London: “I sat down with William and asked him that question [of whether he wanted to leave]. He said: ‘No, I want to stay here and play for you, I'm very happy as always.’ That's great to hear.”
