Next Man Utd manager revealed as Amorim nears sack
Manchester United are getting close to sacking Ruben Amorim following Saturday’s Premier League defeat to Brentford, with the Old Trafford side having drawn up a three-man shortlist of candidates to replace him.
The Red Devils slumped to a 3-1 reverse in which Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty, leaving Amorim hanging by a thread.
After missing out on European football last season following his appointment in November, €250 million was invested in the squad this summer to ensure better results.
These have not come. Man Utd sit 14th in the table behind two of the newly promoted clubs and already four points off the European places.
Consequently, the pressure continues to mount on Amorim, who also saw his side exit the Carabao Cup in embarrassing circumstances at League Two Grimsby Town.
Red Devils take €24m decision
Man Utd are now ready to sack the Portuguese in a decision that has not been taken lightly. It is expected to cost around €24m to jettison the former Sporting CP boss and his staff.
The Red Devils have identified three men they see as stepping into the void that Amorim leaves, TalkSport reports. One of these figures, it is expected, will become the next Manchester United manager.
Gareth Southgate appears to be at the head of the list, with owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe known as a long-time admirer of the former England boss. Out of work, his appointment could be completed with comparatively little difficulty, with a swift turnaround.
The other two men on Man Utd’s managerial shortlist are both currently at Premier League clubs.
Andoni Iraola has worked wonders at Bournemouth while Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace are the only undefeated side left in England’s top-flight, having led them to a spectacular victory over defending champions Liverpool on Saturday.
One of these three men – Southgate, Iraola and Glasner – is set to become the new Man Utd manager, but which of the trio steps up is yet unclear. In any case, they can scarcely do any worse than Amorim.
