Man Utd fear Liverpool interest in €114m midfielder
Manchester United are concerned that Liverpool are now showing interest in one of the Red Devils' primary transfer targets.
During the summer, the club spent €250 million on new recruits, with the forward line revamped with the acquisitions of Matheus Cunha, Ruben Amorim and Benjamin Sesko.
A new midfielder was also desired by manager Ruben Amorim and Brighton's Carlos Baleba emerged as the main target, though the Seagulls' £100m (€114m) asking price meant that negotiations didn't go too far.
United remain interested and will likely target the 21-year-old again in 2026 when they have a new transfer kitty.
However, Football Insider reports that Liverpool now hold major interest in Baleba as Arne Slot looks to add some more steel to his midfield.
Ryan Gravenberch has started the season superbly with the Reds but Slot is believed to be in the market for a ball-winning midfielder to compliment the likes of the Dutchman, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Man Utd should be concerned about Liverpool's Baleba interest
Should United and Liverpool both pursue their interest in Baleba, the Red Devils will likely miss out simply due to their current status compared to Liverpool, who are among the favourites to win the Premier League and Champions League.
“I think it’d be concerning for Manchester United if they are sort of monitoring that situation,” journalist Pete O’Rourke reports, via Football Insider.
“Carlos Baleba is a top player.
“Man United inquired about him in the summer and Brighton’s price tag of around £100million scared United off.
“United still firmly have him on the radar probably for next summer rather than the January window and if Liverpool are in the market for a central-defensive midfielder, I’m sure Baleba will be someone who’s also on their list as well.
“If it came down to who could land them, it’d be worrying for United because they probably need Champions League football to try and convince Baleba to make that move.”
