William Saliba reaches full agreement over new Arsenal contract
William Saliba has officially reached an agreement to sign a new long-term contract at Arsenal after months of negotiations.
The France international has just two years remaining on his current deal at the Emirates Stadium, but he has now committed his future to the club to end speculation of a blockbuster move to Real Madrid.
That is according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who has confirmed that Saliba will sign a new contract “in the coming days” after reaching a full agreement to extend his stay with the Gunners.
Back in July, FootballTransfers exclusively revealed that Saliba was edging closer to signing a contract extension in north London and an official announcement from Arsenal is now imminent.
The 24-year-old has racked up 139 senior appearances since his arrival at the club from Saint-Etienne in 2019 and he has established himself as one of the world’s best defenders under the tutelage of Mikel Arteta.
Fellow Arsenal superstar Bukayo Saka is also expected to sign a new contract at the club in the coming months, with his existing deal due to expire in 2027.
Real Madrid miss out on William Saliba
News of Saliba’s imminent new contract at Arsenal will rule out a transfer to Real Madrid. Los Blancos had identified the Frenchman as their priority centre-back target, however a move is now extremely unlikely and Xabi Alonso’s side will be forced to pursue an alternative option.
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is the most likely candidate to join Real Madrid in 2026, with his contract at Anfield due to expire next summer, while Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi has also emerged as a potential target in recent weeks.
However, the England international is still expected to join Liverpool on a Bosman deal after his proposed move fell through this summer.
