Chelsea wonderkid Reggie Walsh is set to sign his first professional contract at the club next week.

The Cobham academy graduate will put pen to paper on a pre-agreed deal when he turns 17 years old on Monday, as per The Daily Mail, with the Blues eager to tie him down to a long-term contract as soon as possible.

Walsh became Chelsea’s youngest ever starter in a European competition when he was surprisingly included in their starting XI to face Djurgarden in the Europa Conference League semi-final second-leg in 2024-25 and he has already made three senior appearances for his boyhood club.

The central midfielder is yet to feature in a Premier League matchday squad so far this season, however he was named on the substitutes bench versus Benfica in the Champions League, while he has started five of Chelsea U21s’ six league matches this term.

The Daily Mail state that Chelsea may decide against formally announcing Walsh’s professional contract, while they may choose to avoid disclosing the details of the deal.

Enzo Maresca heaps praise on Reggie Walsh

After handing Walsh his first-team debut versus Djurgarden last season, Maresca told reporters: “I felt excited to give him a chance. He’s suited to our style. We’re happy. He’s the eighth debut from the Academy.

“He is perfect for our system, but of course he’s also young so we need to protect him. I just told him to enjoy the experience before he came on.”

Meanwhile, in September, he later added: “I like all the academy guys but Reggie is the one I like more than the rest.

“I like Reggie because he is doing things that I’m demanding to the other players, but he is doing those things without me asking him to do that. I don’t need to ask him to do something. What he’s doing is already what I want from that player.”
