Chelsea listen to Maresca transfer demand amid exit threat
Chelsea have reportedly joined the race to sign Bayern Munich centre-back Dayot Upamecano on a Bosman deal in 2026.
The France international is into the final year of his current contract at the Allianz Arena and widespread reports indicate that he could be set to leave the reigning Bundesliga champions next summer.
Multiple top European clubs have been linked with a free transfer move for Upamecano in recent weeks, including Barcelona, Real Madrid and Liverpool, and Chelsea have now expressed their interest in signing the 26-year-old.
That is according to German publication BILD (via Get Football News Germany), who claim that Chelsea have decided to monitor Upamecano’s situation in Bavaria ahead of a possible deal next year.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca publicly stated his desire for the club to sign a new centre-back after Levi Colwill’s ACL injury in August, however the Blues ultimately decided against following the Italian’s advice in favour of retaining faith in their current options.
Despite this, Chelsea have now decided to target a potential move for Upamecano amid rumours that Maresca could opt to leave Stamford Bridge in order to return to former club Juventus.
Dayot Upamecano to leave Bayern Munich?
In early October, Bayern president Herbert Hainer told reporters: “The talks are ongoing, with Max Eberl and Christoph Freund conducting them. And of course I hope that Dayot will stay with us for a long time to come.”
However, contract extension negotiations are yet to conclude and Upamecano continues to be heavily linked with an Allianz Arena departure.
The Frenchman has made a total of 161 first-team appearances for Bayern since his arrival from RB Leipzig in 2021, winning six trophies and scoring five goals.
If he does opt against signing a new deal at Bayern, it’s believed that Vincent Kompany’s side are likely to pursue a move for Crystal Palace and England star Marc Guehi.
