Alexis Mac Allister issues 'decision' message over Liverpool contract standoff

Alexis Mac Allister has reiterated he wants to stay at Liverpool “for more years” by earning a contract extension at Anfield.

The Argentina international revealed earlier this month that the Reds hierarchy have told him they are “not in a position” to renew his terms at the moment.

Mac Allister, who has just two years left to run on his existing deal, said he was “very sad” after learning of the news from his father and agent, Carlos.

The World Cup winner also revealed he had the chance to leave in the summer transfer window but that his heart is set on staying at Liverpool.

And Mac Allister has now doubled down that desire, saying he will “give it my all” as he looks to show his worth to the Liverpool board over the coming months.

Asked for an update on his contract situation, Mac Allister told ESPN: “There's no firm decision yet. I still have two years left on my contract.

“As I said [earlier in the month], I'm going to give it my all. A lot can happen in that time; there are plenty of options.

“Hopefully it'll be for more years, but if it's just two, I'll have to enjoy them with my family, because I have no doubt that I'm at one of the best clubs in the world.”

Mac Allister has been ever-present for Liverpool so far this season

Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton and Hove Albion for an initial €40.7million (£35m) in June 2023, signing a five-year contract.

He has registered 21 goals and as many assists in 157 appearances for the Merseysiders, winning the Premier League title in 2024-25.

Mac Allister has featured in all seven of Liverpool’s fixtures so far this season, helping them make an unbeaten start to the campaign under Andoni Iraola.

After recording a goal and an assist in the 3-1 Carabao Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur on 15 September, he started Sunday’s 1-0 win at Bournemouth.

The 27-year-old played the full 90 minutes as a second-half strike from the in-form Alexander Isak helped Liverpool collect all three points at the Vitality Stadium.

Mac Allister has now joined up with the Argentina squad ahead of the upcoming friendlies against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin across September and October.

The clash against Benin - which will take place on Tuesday, 6 October in Buenos Aires - will see Lionel Messi bring down the curtain on his legendary Argentina career.

Messi is the record goalscorer and appearance maker for Argentina, with whom he won the World Cup at Qatar 2022 and two Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024.

Following the international break, Mac Allister will return to the Liverpool fold ahead of the Premier League clash against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, 11 October.
