Man Utd's top target confirms transfer interest

Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall has confirmed that Manchester United were interested in signing him this summer before he opted to sign a new contract at St James’ Park.

The England defender, who has been recalled by Thomas Tuchel for the Three Lions’ upcoming Nations League fixtures, was linked with an Old Trafford switch throughout the entire transfer window, but Michael Carrick’s side were ultimately unable to finalise a deal.

It’s understood that Hall had been earmarked as Man Utd’s top left-back target amid their pursuit of a player capable of providing competition for Luke Shaw, however Newcastle blocked a sale having already lost Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.

The Red Devils are expected to rekindle their interest in the 22-year-old next summer, but they will find it difficult to lure him to Old Trafford following his decision to sign a contract extension at Newcastle in early September.

His new deal now runs until 2031 and Man Utd’s attempts to sign him next year will therefore likely be in vain, although Hall has admitted that he will only stay at St James’ Park if the team continue to progress under new boss Matthias Jaissle.

Lewis Hall transfer message

“No, honestly, it didn’t [affect me]. I guess whenever you’re linked to another team, you know that you’re doing something right. I guess it’s just a credit to your own performances and how you are as a player, how you are as a person,” Hall told reporters (via The Sun) when asked about Man Utd’s transfer interest.

“I took that as a positive, but at the same time, I knew how much I love playing here and I knew that since the manager came in, I knew the ambitions and what we wanted to achieve.

“After not many conversations, not many training sessions, I knew that the manager was going to be really good for this club and I knew that as a team, bringing in new players and improving the squad was really important and as soon as we did that, it was a no-brainer really to sign.”

When asked if he will stay at Newcastle for the foreseeable future, Hall added: “I think so. When you’re at a team you don’t think too far into the future.

“Obviously, I’m really grateful for the contract that I’ve received and the trust that I’ve been given from the board and from the manager and everything like that.

“But yeah, I’m just taking it game by game, just trying to do the best I can for this club. We’ve got ambitions and as long as we achieve these ambitions and achieve what we want to achieve, I’m sure I’ll be here for a long time.”
