Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez insists that he 'did not even think about' Chelsea's summer offer for him.

The Blues attempted to sign the Spain international late in the previous window after seeing a deal for Xavi Simons fall through. Although Chelsea had little hope of actually landing Fermin, they nevertheless decided to make a bid to show their clear intent.

The offer clocked in at just €40 million and was, unsurprisingly, rejected out of hand by Barcelona, who were reluctant to entertain a potential departure of the 22-year-old. Hours before the proposal arrived, head coach Hansi Flick had publicly stated that he wanted to keep Fermin.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has since posited that Chelsea simply wanted to lay the groundwork for a future move. They did not expect to sign him this summer, but they wanted to show that they would welcome him with open arms should he ever decide to leave Catalunya.

Lopez has started three out of the five games he has played so far this season. He netted a brace against Valencia earlier this month and seems to be loving life at Barcelona.

Fermin: I didn't think about joining Chelsea

The player has been quizzed about Chelsea's interest several times since the summer window closed, and he was again asked about the Blues during an interview with RAC1 on Tuesday.

Fermin insisted that he 'didn't even think about' joining Chelsea and has no plans to depart Barcelona anytime soon. "I didn't even think about it," he said. "I never had the intention of leaving, and I think the club didn't want to sell me.

"I've been a Barca fan all my life. Since I was a child. Everything comes from an uncle of my mother's, Miri, who has always been a Barca fan." He then confirmed that he did receive offers to leave Barcelona: "I received some, yes, but I don't think any came from Real Madrid."

Fermin currently faces some time on the sidelines after having to be substituted against Getafe at the weekend. He was reduced to tears as he was forced to walk off the pitch after feeling discomfort in his groin. He is expected to be out for three weeks.
