Deadline Day recap

Arsenal had a very quiet Deadline Day, with the club refraining from making a last-minute signing despite a shortage of options for the left wing. There was interest in Lyon's Malick Fofana, and personal terms were not an issue, but he joined Sunderland after a bizarre saga.

With no players coming in, Arsenal's Deadline Day was mainly spent confirming outgoings. Midfielder Fabio Vieira completed his long-awaited permanent move to Hamburger SV after starring for the Bundesliga side on loan last season.

Striker Gabriel Jesus also departed permanently, joining Barcelona after they, like Arsenal, failed to complete a deal for Atletico Madrid superstar Julian Alvarez. Youngsters Ethan Nwaneri and Setford were sent on loan to Borussia Dortmund and Stevenage, respectively.

Who did Arsenal sign in the summer window?

It was a strange transfer window for Arsenal because they made some very good signings but did not solve their biggest issue. Christos Tzolis was signed for €40 million from Club Brugge, but he, surprisingly, ended up being the only reinforcement on the left wing.

Additionally, Bruno Guimaraes joined from Newcastle for €87.5m, Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for €59.6m and goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer from Leeds. Piero Hincapie had his loan from Bayer Leverkusen made permanent for €40m.

In terms of outgoings, Arsenal sold Leandro Trossard to Besiktas for €18m, Jakub Kiwior to Porto for €17m, Christian Norgaard to Everton for €8.15m and Karl Hein to Werder Bremen for 3m - in addition to the aforementioned Jesus and Vieira. Reiss Nelson had his contract terminated.

Nelson returns to Feyenoord

And Nelson is now set to return to Feyenoord, where he previously played on loan in the 2021/22 season.

The former Arsenal winger completed his medical on Wednesday. He left the Gunners by mutual agreement earlier in the summer after a whopping 18 years at the club.

Although he was still under contract for a year, it had become abundantly clear that he was surplus to requirements after being loaned to Fulham and Brentford and struggling with injuries.

Kolkheti attacker Andria Bartishvili has arrived in London ahead of completing his move to Arsenal, according to Fabrizio Romano.

An agreement for the transfer of the teenager was reached last week, with Arsenal paying €4.5m for the 17-year-old, who has been likened to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Bartishvili will finalise his transfer this week and then return to Georgia, where he is currently on loan at Iberia 1999 until the end of the year. He will relocate to the UK after turning 18 next March.

Arteta pulled plug on Fofana

Mikel Arteta made the final decision on Arsenal's pursuit of Lyon winger Malick Fofana, The Athletic understands.

The Belgium international was being considered as an option for the left wing in the final days of the window, but the Gunners ultimately decided against finalising his signing on Deadline Day.

Despite Arteta being a long-term admirer of the 20-year-old, he had concerns over his suitability for the Premier League. With concerns over UEFA's spending rules and no uniform backing for the move, Arteta decided that signing him for €40m wasn't worth the risk.
