Enzo Maresa believes that Chelsea’s squad isn’t good enough to compete in both the Premier League and Champions League this season, according to a bombshell report.

The Blues have endured an underwhelming start to the 2025-26 campaign and their summer transfer business has been called into question following an injury crisis that has seen a number of key stars ruled out for months.

Levi Colwill is expected to miss the majority of the season due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, and Liam Delap and Dario Essugo are also long-term absentees. In addition, Chelsea are likely to be without Cole Palmer, Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana until after the October international break, while Romeo Lavia and Benoit Badiashile have both only just returned to full fitness.

The decision to loan Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich has been criticised on a number of occasions, while Chelsea’s failure to sign a new centre-back and a new goalkeeper has been identified as a major error by fans and pundits alike.

Despite this, Maresca has repeatedly stated that he remains a huge admirer of the playing squad available to him over the past year. In mid-September, he even told reporters: “I think we have a good squad.

“My press conference one year ago, I said I was in love with the squad, so the squad was already really good. Since then we have tried to make some changes, but overall I think the squad is good.”

’Enzo Maresca is lying’

Although Maresca claims to “love” the Chelsea squad, journalist Rahman Osman believes this is wide of the mark.

He told FourFourTwo: “Those close to Maresca say he genuinely believes this squad simply isn’t good enough to compete in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Osman added: “He [Maresca] knows the difference between depth and genuine quality. When he rotates his first team, the drop-off is alarming.”

Chelsea have spent well over €1.5 billion on new signings over the past three years, but Maresca is reportedly unsatisfied with his current set of options, and the Blues are expected to dip into the market yet again next summer in search of additional reinforcements.
