Fabrizio Romano says that Enzo Maresca retains the trust of the Chelsea board despite fears over his future as manager.

There have been reports that Maresca is at risk of the sack if results don't improve imminently after a difficult start to the current season.

The 45-year-old guided Chelsea to Europa Conference League and Club World Cup glory earlier this year, but the Blues have endured a tricky start to the 2025-26 campaign and fans have been quick to blame Maresca.

The west London giants have only won three of their eight matches in all competitions so far this season - versus West Ham United, Fulham and Lincoln City - and they face a crucial week with clashes against Benfica and Liverpool on the agenda.

The pressure on Maresca was added on Saturday as Chelsea lost 3-1 at home to Brighton in the Premier League.

Romano says Maresca is safe for now

However, speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano reports that Maresca retains the faith of the Chelsea board and is not at risk of the sack right now.

Romano explains that some of the bad results Maresca has overseen have been conditioned by red cards - such as in the loss to Brighton.

He adds that Chelsea generally prefer to wait until the end of the season before assessing Maresca's work so unless the wheels really fall off, the Italian will have time to get the team back on track.

Chelsea appointed Maresca as their new head coach in the summer of 2024 on a five-year contract.

The Italian succeeded Mauricio Pochettino as the club’s boss.

Chelsea reportedly paid €10 million in compensation to buy the Italian out of his Leicester contract, illustrating how highly they rated him.

Maresca had led Leicester City to the Championship title last season, playing some of the most impressive football in England in the early parts of the campaign.

There had been some opposition to Maresca’s appointment from fans, though, with Leicester losing seven of their final 14 games of the season and just about limping over the line.

In his first season at the club, Chelsea finished fourth in the Premier League and won the Conference League and Club World Cup.
