The Magpies are looking to sign a striker amid the ongoing uncertainty surrounding star player Alexander Isak. Newcastle are adamant that the Sweden international is going nowhere, but the speculation surrounding his future has ramped up massively over the past seven days.
At the start of last week, Liverpool approached the St. James' Park club to inform them that they would be ready to pay as much as £120 million (€138m) for the 25-year-old, but Newcastle rebuffed the Premier League champions.
In turn, Liverpool stepped up their interest in Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, who is now expected to join the Anfield outfit in a deal worth more than €90m.
Prior to Liverpool snapping up the Frenchman, it was Newcastle who were in talks to sign the 23-year-old. The idea was to pair Ekitike and Isak, but many - including Liverpool - felt that the former was really a replacement for the latter.
Newcastle among favourites to sign Kolo Muani
At the end of last week, Eddie Howe provided an unconvincing response on the future of Isak, and transfer insider Duncan Castles believes that something may be afoot, as he has disclosed on the latest episode of The Transfers Podcast.
This is evidenced by Newcastle bidding for Ekitike, and by the fact that they remain keen to add a big-name striker to Howe's squad. We understand that one player under serious consideration is PSG outcast Randal Kolo Muani.
Newcastle previously held an interest in the France international, and the Magpies are now firmly back in the race for the former Juventus loanee, according to Castles.
"Juventus want to keep him but have not been able as yet to meet the asking price of PSG, who would like to achieve €50m as a transfer fee for Kolo Muani," Castles revealed.
"Unsurprisingly, there's interest from England because there has been interest from England in Kolo Muani for years. He went to PSG ahead of interest from clubs including Manchester United.
"What I'm hearing from the French end is that there have been enquiries from Man Utd about his availability, but I don't think they are as advanced as they are with other clubs.
"Newcastle United are involved in this conversation, and I think at present it looks like they are the most likely destination for Kolo Muani, and again, this makes you wonder what is happening with Isak because of his similarities to Isak as a player."
