Why JJ Gabriel joining Barcelona would be a Man Utd disaster

Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel is in talks to join Barcelona, which would make his departure even more painful for the Red Devils.

Earlier this week, news emerged that the 15-year-old has formally requested to have his Man Utd registration cancelled, which would see him become a free agent. Although there had been murmurs of discontent behind the scenes, this came as a shock to the club.

Gabriel - or his camp - had chosen the nuclear option after growing frustrated with his lack of a first-team pathway. The decision was made after he was snubbed for the Old Trafford club's Champions League clash with Sabah.

He instead had to suit up against the Azeri side in the Youth League and bagged a hat-trick. After the game, he deleted every mention of Man Utd from his social media accounts.

While the Red Devils seem to be fighting a losing battle, there is still a glimmer of hope that Gabriel can be convinced to change his mind. Last year, Jason Wilcox successfully fought to keep him at the club when he seemed to be on the way out.

Gabriel to join Barca?

However, Man Utd need to be realistic about the situation. There is a duty of care that needs to be respected, and they ultimately can't force him to stay against his wishes. Rejecting his request to have his registration cancelled could force the Premier League to step in and arbitrate.

No matter how talented Gabriel is, he is still a child, after all. Manager Michael Carrick has confirmed that ensuring the youngster's well-being is paramount. If that means letting him leave, then so be it.

Still, a departure would be a major blow to Man Utd's sporting project. They were planning to hand him a scholarship contract when he becomes eligible for one next month and then a professional deal next year.

The situation has been likened to Lionel Messi leaving Barcelona before playing a senior game for them, such is Gabriel's potential. Naturally, then, his exit would also be a financial blow for the Red Devils.

In that context, a move abroad would be the worst-case scenario for the club because it would significantly reduce the compensation Man Utd would be owed for training him.

According to the Daily Mail, a move abroad would entitle the Old Trafford club to just £300,000 (€350,000), whereas a move to another Premier League academy would yield a "substantially higher" fee.

There are strict rules in place for underage transfers between Premier League clubs, including on compensation. If clubs can't find common ground on a fee, it will have to be determined by a tribunal on the basis of fair market value.

In February, the Professional Football Compensation Committee ruled that Liverpool had to pay Chelsea an initial £2.8 million (€3.3m) for Rio Ngumoha plus potential add-ons, while the Blues also retained a 20% sell-on clause on future profit.

Man Utd would miss out on such a hefty fee were Gabriel to move abroad, which increasingly looks like the direction of travel. He can leave the UK when he turns 16 next month due to possessing an Irish and Cypriot passport.

In recent days, Real Madrid have emerged as his most likely destination, but on Friday, it was revealed that Gabriel had travelled to Barcelona for discussions with the reigning LaLiga champions.

The Catalans are long-standing admirers of the 15-year-old and already welcomed him to their facilities in 2024, which allowed him to meet Lamine Yamal. He has also been approached by Bayern and may have held talks with PSG as he travelled to Barcelona via France.
