JJ Gabriel arrives in Barcelona as 'sensible' Man Utd decision confirmed

Michael Carrick has confirmed how Manchester United are planning to navigate their tricky JJ Gabriel situation, with the youngster having arrived in Barcelona for transfer talks.

A veritable bomb exploded at Old Trafford last week when reports emerged that the biggest prospect at Man Utd had formally requested to leave the club after growing frustrated with his first-team pathway - or lack thereof.

The 15-year-old reportedly handed in a "formal notice" to have his registration at Man Utd cancelled, which would see him become a free agent and allow him to join a different club. Thanks to an Irish passport, he could even head abroad once he turns 16 next month.

And indeed, this appears to be the direction of travel. There have been dozens of conflicting reports on his most likely next destination, and Real Madrid seem to have crystallised as the club with the best chances of securing the signing of Man Utd's "Kid Messi."

However, Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail understands that Gabriel has just arrived in Barcelona - not Madrid - for talks with the reigning LaLiga champions, who have held an interest in the prodigy for years and who want to challenge their El Clasico rivals for his signing.

Carrick: Gabriel's well-being is the biggest priority

Obviously, the Red Devils don't want to lose the teenager. Having already convinced him to stay despite strong interest last year, there is still a glimmer of hope that history can repeat itself. Ultimately, however, they need to be realistic about the situation.

With Gabriel - or his camp - pushing for an exit, Man Utd may be left with no choice but to grant him his wish. Because of his age, the club need to be very careful with how they navigate this situation.

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the Old Trafford outfit won't force Gabriel to stay if it becomes clear that there really is no way to change his mind. This would avoid needing the Premier League to step in and arbitrate.

"What United want to make sure is that if there is even a small chance to continue together with JJ Gabriel, to resolve the situation and to keep him at the club, it has to be with the right attitude and the right feeling," Romano explained.

"United don't want to force anyone. Obviously they want to keep the boy. Obviously they don't want to lose one of the best talents in the world at 15 years old, but at the same time they don't want to force anyone.

"What they will do these days is try to have a conversation with the family of the player, with the agents of the player and with the player himself to try to resolve the situation."

This has now been echoed by head coach Michael Carrick, who insists that the club's main priority is to ensure the well-being of the youngster amid this intense media scrutiny over his future.

"I think he's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important that we certainly don't play anything out here," Carrick said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday's clash with Fulham.

"I think with the exposure and the scrutiny and everything that you've got to be careful, be sensible, and think of him as much as anything. So the situation will work itself out, or whatever way it's going to work itself out, make sure he's okay."

On Thursday, Carrick told Sky Sports: "We have to be a little bit careful on that one. He's a 15-year-old boy. It's more about the welfare, the care and the attention of JJ as a child, really. The situation is what it is, but we have to be careful about the exposure and how much we jump on that."

Losing him would be a monumental blow, but Man Utd evidently don't want to stand in his way if he really has his heart set on leaving and, potentially, moving to Barcelona or Real Madrid.
