'No way back' for Isak at Newcastle with Liverpool target in Spain after 'repeated' transfer demands
Alexander Isak has reportedly travelled to Spain to continue his pre-season training away from Newcastle as the striker continues to try and force a record transfer to Liverpool.
Newcastle are currently on their pre-season tour of Asia, with Isak having been left out of the squad after asking to explore moves away from the club following strong interest from Liverpool.
Isak has been carrying a minor thigh injury, which was the official reason given for his absence from the tour and the 25-year-old is understood to be continuing is rehab in Zubieta where his former club Real Sociedad are based.
That is according to Basque outlet El Diaro Vasco, who claim that Isak has been training with a private trainer to help him rehabilitate from his injury in order to regain fitness ahead of the new season.
The situation suggests that Isak may have no intention of returning to Newcastle despite having three years remaining on his contract, with reports already emerging of a verbal agreement over personal terms for a potential move to Liverpool.
Newcastle have insisted that Isak is not for sale but their resolve is expected to be tested in the coming days with Liverpool preparing a record bid after finalising the €75 million sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich.
’No way back’ for Isak after ‘repeated’ demands to leave Newcastle
While Isak’s presence in Spain may only further fuel speculation of his motives, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has historically allowed his players to rehabilitate from injuries in their preferred environment, which could indicate that the Swede’s absence is not unauthorised.
With Newcastle’s first team squad and staff also all travelling for their pre-season tour, it may have been accepted that there was no need for Isak to be present at the club’s training ground, particularly with his injury.
However, the forward could also be preparing to continue his standoff with Newcastle after The Athletic reported that Isak had ‘repeatedly’ told club officials that this previous campaign would be his last season at St James’ Park due to his desire to leave for a club more capable of challenging at the highest level.
Having also seen the Magpies renege on offering him a new contract last summer due to PSR reasons, some believe there to be ‘no way back’ for Isak according to the report and the situation could end up forcing Newcastle’s hand into a reluctant sale.
