Ruben Amorim has only overseen five matches in charge of AC Milan, yet the former Manchester United manager finds his position as head coach at the San Siro club under threat.

The Rossoneri suffered their first defeat of the season against Benfica in the Europa League on Wednesday, which was a setback that followed league draws against Juventus and Lazio.

While the results have not been drastic, there are already concerns over the Portuguese coach’s style of play and his refusal to shift away from a 3-4-3 formation in what is an echo of his time with Man Utd.

The expectations on Milan were enormous this season following the signings of Goncalo Ramos, Diego Moreira, Mario Gila and Omari Hutchison, but these have yet to translate to results, and there is growing unrest within the Rossoneri.

With just a handful of games played, Amorim is under fire, yet according to Gazzetta dello Sport, his job is not in question… yet.

Milan make Amorim sack decision

Milan’s plan for the manager is clear: he retains the faith of president Gerry Cardinale, who has given the ex-Man Utd boss his unreserved support.

Gazzetta reports: “Confidence in the coach is therefore not in question, and even in the discussions following Wednesday's match, the situation was analysed without dramatising the consequences.

“Amorim remains firmly on the bench.”

Amorim admits he’s under pressure

The Portuguese has admitted previously, however, that he is under pressure.

“I know at Manchester United and Milan, two big clubs with the pressure to win, people expect everything in just a few months, and I feel the same pressure here,” Amorim said. “I know it will take time, but I also know that there is big pressure at this club, yet I prefer this kind of job because if I need to fail one day, I want to fail big.

“I have a lot of passion for this club, I want to help this club to be better, I don't know if I will have the time, but I look at my players and I think they are listening to everything that I say in training, and that gives me hope we can solve these problems.”

Amorim, meanwhile, continues to back his 3-4-3 system and has continues to make big selection calls, such as overlooking Christian Pulisic for a starting berth so far.

He showed at Manchester United that he is prepared to stand by these decisions in the long term and that he will persist with his beliefs in order to change the fortunes of the Milan giants.
