Amorim admits pressure is like Man Utd as Milan owner plans crisis talks with manager

Ruben Amorim has admitted he is feeling similar pressure at Milan as he did at Manchester United, with a meeting planned between him and the club’s owners over their performance issues.

Amorim was appointed as Milan’s head coach during the summer after being sacked by United in January, having overseen the club’s lowest Premier League finish in 50 years and having the worst record of any manager post Sir Alex Ferguson.

Milan have won just two of their six games under Amorim and the 41-year-old came under fire after seeing his side lose 2-0 at home to Benfica on Wednesday in the Europa League.

Reports in Italy have now claimed that Amorim will hold talks with Milan owner Gerry Cardinale this week to analyse the current situation and the Portuguese coach raised eyebrows with comments that, if he were to fail, he would prefer to ‘fail big’.

“I know at Manchester United and Milan, two big clubs with the pressure to win, people expect everything in just a few months, and I feel the same pressure here,” Amorim said. “I know it will take time, but I also know that there is big pressure at this club, yet I prefer this kind of job because if I need to fail one day, I want to fail big.

“I have a lot of passion for this club, I want to help this club to be better, I don't know if I will have the time, but I look at my players and I think they are listening to everything that I say in training, and that gives me hope we can solve these problems.”

Amorim system comes under familiar fire after tough start with Milan

Milan have started their Serie A campaign unbeaten, winning against Torino and Venezia before draws away to Juventus and Lazio, but concerns have been emerging internally with their playstyle despite the results, which culminated in the loss to Benfica.

According to Milan News, there are issues with all phases of play both with and without the ball, with some flaws being accepted as long-term but some also due to the coach’s decisions and team selection.

Milan are winless in their last three games, while €74 million club record signing Goncalo Ramos has failed to register a shot on target during those matches, leading to questions over whether the system is suited to his strengths, in a similar criticism to the struggles of his forward at Man Utd.

“I think this team is a little bit different, they are more accustomed to working with three defenders, they are a little bit faster, a little bit stronger,” Amorim said when comparing Milan and United.

“Of course, I don't have the clear characteristics that are perfect at this moment, but it is impossible when you take on a new team to have those perfect characteristics right away.

He added: "This conversation of my idea is to play football. To do that, we need to play the ball, but we are creating more problems for ourselves when we have the ball than when the opponent has it.

"We are trying to create the routines to have more possession in the box, we had some in the second half, but we are not creating, we lack creativity near the box.”
