Antoine Semenyo will be the subject of a January transfer bid from Liverpool, according to Bournemouth, as a major revelation over the player’s release clause has emerged.

One of the most in-form players in the Premier League this season, Semenyo has caught the eye of several top clubs after producing six goals and three assists in just 11 outings for the Cherries.

Although Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked with the 25-year-old, Liverpool are believed to be the furthest advanced in the race to sign the Ghana winger.

€74m release clause gives clubs a clear path

Crucially, Semenyo has a €74 million (£65m) release clause active in January, meaning any club that matches this figure and the payment terms will be free to discuss a contract with him.

The Telegraph reports that it remains unclear whether the payment terms demand an upfront fee or allow instalments.

Even more significantly, the release clause will change in the summer window. The fee will be lower, though not below €57m (£50m), which could tempt interested clubs to delay their move.

Liverpool expected to move in January

Bournemouth believe that Liverpool are ready to act quickly and will make a bid in January.

“Sources at the Vitality Stadium are braced for approaches for the Ghana international when the window opens in five weeks’ time, with his release fee relatively low for a Premier League player of his standing,” the report claims.

Not only are Liverpool struggling in Premier League form, losing seven of their last eight matches, but they also need cover for Mohamed Salah, who will be away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt in January.

Long-term successor to Mohamed Salah?

Semenyo has been earmarked by Liverpool as a potential long-term successor for Salah, who is widely expected to leave the club in the summer.

For this reason, the Reds could be willing to pay the full release clause in January to secure the deal early and ward off competition from Manchester United and Chelsea.

Semenyo’s previous Premier League snubs

Semenyo already rejected offers from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur before signing a new deal with Bournemouth in the summer, but the opportunity to join the Premier League champions may be too tempting to resist.
