Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool return decision announced
Liverpool manager Arne Slot eased the pressure on himself with a 2-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday, but that has not stopped rumours of Jurgen Klopp returning to the club from continuing.
Klopp oversaw the most successful period in Liverpool’s recent history as he led the club from 2015-2024, winning the 2019/20 Premier League title and the 2018/19 Champions League.
Having been the architect of the Anfield club’s recent success, there has been a clamour for the German to return given the current struggles of Slot as he attempts to rebuild the side.
Klopp, who is Global Head of Soccer with Red Bull, having insisted he was taking a break from management following a nine-year stint at Anfield, fuelled rumours of a possible return to Liverpool on an appearance on the Diary of a CEO podcast.
He said: “I said I will never coach another team, a different team, in England. So that means if then it’s Liverpool… yeah. Theoretically, it’s possible.”
Klopp not returning to Liverpool as FSG willing to be patient with Slot
The Telegraph claims that while Slot is under pressure, if the Dutchman does leave, it will not pave the way for Klopp to make an unlikely return.
“FSG president Mike Gordon, Edwards, Ward and the rest will certainly not want to go back to Klopp. Last season was vindication that Liverpool could win without him as well as with him,” Sam Wallace writes.
While it is stressed that Slot is “not immune” from the sack, Liverpool’s owners FSG are willing to be patient with the Dutchman.
“It is the view of FSG that managers, like players, can go through a dip in form. Alexis Mac Allister is having a poor season and yet the club would not consider selling him. Why not the same rules for managers too? They paid £8m to get Slot from Feyenoord, so convinced were they of his suitability and since then he has won a Premier League. That counts for a great deal with FSG,” the report adds.
Klopp being effectively off the table means Slot’s position is more secure, however. If the German was truly pushing to return, the pressure on the current Liverpool manager would only intensify.
