'I expect him to join': Liverpool STUNNED as new club takes lead in Guehi transfer
Liverpool could be dealt a crushing blow in their pursuit of Marc Guehi after reports that the Crystal Palace captain is ‘expected’ to join another Premier League rival who previously had not been in the race to sign him.
Guehi will be one of the most in-demand players on the market in 2026, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, while Palace could look to cash in on him in January after learning of his intention against signing a new deal.
A move to Liverpool has been highly anticipated following the breakdown of Guehi’s transfer to Anfield on deadline day but Football Insider report that Manchester City could now emerge as frontrunners to sign the England international.
Liverpool had been looking to Guehi as a replacement for Ibrahima Konate, who is also out of contract in the summer and wanted by a number of teams, even with Real Madrid supposedly cooling their interest in the Frenchman recently.
City could turn to Guehi as a long-term successor to John Stones and insider Keith Wyness claimed he ‘expects’ Guehi to ‘end up’ joining Pep Guardiola’s side.
“I think Liverpool have got themselves in such a bind over the [Ibrahima] Konate issue, the Marc Guehi thing will unfortunately fade away for them,” Wyness said. “So I think, yes, I think that he will end up at City and I think that’s where I expect him to be.”
Glasner opens up on Guehi failed Liverpool transfer
Guehi will have his pick of virtually every major side across Europe next summer, although Palace may push to sell him in January if an offer of around €40 million is submitted.
Liverpool are expected to make a January approach for Guehi, although Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has admitted Palace need to keep hold of their captain in order to ‘progress’ as a club.
“I told you with Guehi, everybody said I threatened to step down, it’s completely wrong,” Glasner said. “I just said if you sell Guehi and we don’t have the right replacement, we could struggle.
“If you are fine with this for Crystal Palace – not for Oliver Glasner, never – for Crystal Palace, sell him. If you don’t want that situation, you have to keep him, and the chairman decided that Marc stays.
“It’s the same here, I give my advice, but it’s never a wish, it’s nothing to do with we have to buy players [so] that Oliver Glasner signs a new contract. It’s just if we want to progress in the Premier League environment.”
