Arne Slot’s position as Liverpool manager is as vulnerable as ever after he watched his side fight back from a goal down to salvage a 1-1 draw with Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday.

Florian Wirtz made his first big impact in the Premier League for the Reds with the game-tying strike, which has officially have gone down as an own goal from Nordi Mukiele, but it’s not been enough to stop further scrutiny falling on Slot.

The Reds’ first draw of this season sees them down in eighth, but it would have been worse had Federico Chiesa not heroically cleared a late effort from Wilson Isidor off the line after the forward had rounded Alisson.

Liverpool might not have lost, but it was another bruising night for Slot, who continues to edge closer to the sack.

Following the success over West Ham on Sunday, he was bold with his team selection once again, leaving Mohamed Salah on the bench for a second successive Premier League game.

“We were a bit surprised to have time and space to play,” Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris commented after the game, with Liverpool’s work out of possession curiously passive.

With dissent among fans building, how secure is Slot’s job?

Will Liverpool sack Arne Slot?

There appears to be little danger of Slot leaving Liverpool immediately in the aftermath of the Sunderland draw, despite a claim from Indykaila last week that he needed to win against both West Ham and the Black Cats to keep his job.

His position has also been marginally strengthened by a report confirming that Jurgen Klopp will not return to the club.

The Telegraph reports that Slot might be under pressure, but the return of Klopp, who is now a key figure in the Red Bull football universe, is not in the pipeline.

“FSG president Mike Gordon, Edwards, Ward and the rest will certainly not want to go back to Klopp. Last season was vindication that Liverpool could win without him as well as with him,” Sam Wallace writes.

What has Slot said?

Slot commented last week that he is confident he is not about to lose his job.

“I have been feeling safe. I have a lot of support from above. It would be nice if I could turn it around and produce a victory. But the noise is part and parcel of being a coach if you are not doing well,” the Dutchman said after the 4-1 loss to PSV in the Champions League.

Liverpool legend and popular pundit Jamie Carragher has also suggested that Slot is not yet in real danger.

“Liverpool's not a sacking club,” Carragher told CBS Sports after the PSV defeat (via Sky Sports).

“Liverpool are different from almost every club in European football, where the manager is the king, the managers get time. Liverpool have never sacked a manager who's won the league.”

It appears that Slot is safe for the moment, but Liverpool clearly can’t go on like this.
