Fabrizio Romano News: Alvarez apologises to Atletico as Man Utd manager shortlist revealed
Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on several stories including the latest on Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez and Manchester United boss Michael Carrick.
Alvarez apology could have ‘an impact’ on his future
Alvarez has apologised to Atletico fans for trying to force a move away in the summer - something Romano believes could have “an impact” on his future.
Argentina international Alvarez addressed supporters after firing Atletico to a 1-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga on Saturday.
The 26-year-old said he understands why fans were angry after he expressed his desire to leave Atletico while representing Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.
Alvarez wanted to join Barcelona in the summer but Atletico refused to sell their prized asset to a direct rival, leading to a war of words between the two clubs.
But Romano has speculated on what the future may hold for Alvarez after the forward apologised to the Atletico fanbase for the first time.
In a new YouTube video, Romano said: “Julian goes public saying ‘sorry’, Julian goes on the pitch scoring a goal, Julian changes his agent [from Fernando Hidalgo to Pablo Barquero], so big changes around Julian Alvarez.
“Obviously, this can have an impact on his future, for sure, for Barcelona and all the rest [of the clubs interested in signing him]. But also with Atletico Madrid because the words from Julian Alvarez are strong.”
Howe, Nagelsmann & Conte in contention for Man Utd job
Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte are “realistic” options to become the next Man Utd manager, according to Romano.
The Red Devils are believed to have started the process of identifying possible replacements for Carrick, who is under pressure at Old Trafford.
Carrick was named permanent manager in May following a successful spell as interim boss last season - but United have only won two of their 11 games this term.
And Romano believes Howe, Nagelsmann and Conte are genuine contenders for the United job, should the club decide to sack Carrick.
However, transfer insider Romano says Brighton and Hove Albion boss Fabian Hurzeler and Aston Villa manager Unai Emery are not in the mix for the post.
Romano said: “These could be [the] realistic options [for the Man Utd job]: Howe, Nagelsmann, Conte. Unai Emery is completely focused on Aston Villa and Fabian Hurzeler is completely focused on Brighton.
“But first, Michael Carrick, he deserves respect, he deserves an extra opportunity according to Manchester United directors, and so [after] United-Bournemouth [on Sunday there will be] more to follow.
“The next days, the next weeks at Manchester United will be absolutely, absolutely crucial for the future of the club.”
Howe, Nagelsmann and Conte are all available after leaving Newcastle United, Germany and Napoli respectively in the summer.
