Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United are on the verge of sealing their first signing of 2026 ahead of the January transfer window.

United spent more than €250 million on players during the summer and the club are hoping to be active in the market again during the winter, with a midfielder believed to be Ruben Amorim’s biggest priority.

While the likes of Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton feature high on United’s wishlist, any deal for a big money Premier League star is more likely to be pursued at the end of the season.

Instead, United may be forced to look at more cost-effective solutions such as young and unproven talent, which they appear to have secured with their newest signing.

Romano revealed that Colombian midfielder Cristian Orozco is set to travel to England this weekend to finalise a $1m (€860k) deal from Fortaleza in his native country.

The 17-year-old will be unable to join United until July when he turns 18 but the Red Devils have a preliminary agreement to sign Orozco and will show him around the stadium and training ground upon his arrival in England in order to familiarise him with his future club.

United continue worldwide wonderkid recruitment with Orozco transfer

Orozco is the latest prospect to be signed from relative obscurity by United, with the club having widened their academy recruitment in recent years due to Brexit rules which limit their scope in bringing in European youngsters.

Midfielder Sekou Kone was signed from Malian side Guidars last year, while United agreed to sign teenage defender Diego Leon for €4m in January, with the Paraguayan moving to Old Trafford during the summer.

United have also been linked to the signing of Robinho Junior in recent days, the 17-year-old son of the former Manchester City star Robinho.

Orozco has somewhat of a low profile and not much is known about the teenager just yet, although United were impressed with his performances in the under-17 South American championships earlier this year where he captained Colombia to the final.

He has since featured for Colombia at this month’s Under-17 World Cup in Qatar but Colombia were knocked out in the round of 32 by France.
