Celtic have been informed that CFR Cluj are eager to sell Louis Munteanu during the January transfer window following their failed summer move for the 23-year-old.

The Romania striker was identified as one of Celtic’s top striker targets ahead of the 2025-26 campaign and they even saw an €8 million offer rejected by Cluj.

However, the eight-time Romanian champions set their asking price at €23m (£20m) and Munteanu was ultimately forced to remain at the club, despite interest from multiple clubs across Europe.

Ajax, Stade Rennais and Valencia were all eager to land the 23-year-old and the former were even close to finalising a deal on Transfer Deadline Day before deciding to bring Denmark international Kasper Dolberg to the club.

Munteanu, who has registered four goal contributions in 14 matches this season, is expected to be involved in a transfer tug-of-war during the January window and Cluj president Iuliu Muresan has admitted he will look to sell the striker in 2026 amid a plethora of financial problems.

Louis Munteanu to join Celtic?

“The transfer of Louis Munteanu would be a priority for us,” Muresan told GSP (via The Daily Record).

“Given our financial problems, selling Munteanu would certainly be a big breath of fresh air. And especially for as much as possible if it were.

“I was declared it could be a disaster, insolvency. The problem is not there for now. We have debts, financial problems, but we are managing them.

“The players are a salary behind, the junior centre and the administration are up to date with their salaries.”

After failing to agree a deal for Munteanu this summer, Celtic ultimately decided to sign Kelechi Iheanacho on a free transfer on 2 September and the Nigeria star has scored three goals in eight games for the club.
