Celtic striker Kasper Hogh has been warned that he could soon be dropped from the starting XI following his arrival from Bodo/Glimt for a club-record fee of €12.9 million.

The 25-year-old moved to Celtic Park over the summer after netting five goals in 12 Champions League games last season, including a brace versus Manchester City, but he has struggled immensely since joining Martin O’Neill’s side.

Hogh scored a hat-trick in his second appearance for the Bhoys - a 5-1 win over Kilmarnock - but those are the only goals he has mustered in seven matches across all competitions since his move to Glasgow.

The Denmark international was anonymous during Celtic’s 3-0 loss to Old Firm rivals Rangers on Sunday afternoon and his place in O’Neill’s preferred starting XI now looks in serious doubt amid strong competition from fellow summer signing Camilo Duran and Chelsea loanee Shumaira Mheuka.

Duran has scored six goals and provided three assists in just 10 games since his move from Qarabag and while Mheuka is yet to register his first Celtic goal, he has caught the eye in a number of cameo appearances as a substitute.

Speaking to The Scottish Sun (via Glasgow Times) after Celtic’s 3-0 loss to Rangers, ex-Scotland forward Kris Boyd said: “When you look at Kasper Hogh his output has to be a lot more than it is right now. I know he got the hattrick against Kilmarnock but, other than that, has he really done anything else?

“You've got to be looking for a lot more from someone that's come in for that type of money. He's brilliant in interviews, seems a brilliant lad but that's not enough to get to a level where you're scoring every week for Celtic and putting yourself about causing problems.

“If Yang [Hyun-jun] had been there, I don't think at £11million that Celtic spent, he [Hogh] would've played. And that would be a worry. Are Celtic stronger than they were some places than last season? I don't think they are.”

Celtic spent over €30m on new signings over the summer, including Hogh and Duran, although their net spend was positive thanks to the lucrative sales of Arne Engels to West Ham United, Daizen Maeda to Ipswich Town and Reo Hatate to Burnley.
