Arsenal rocked as Real Madrid chase €115m summer deal
Real Madrid have reportedly joined Arsenal in the race to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer.
The Italy international has been heavily linked with a move to Mikel Arteta’s side in recent weeks and FootballTransfers understands that Arsenal are eager to finalise a deal for the 25-year-old when the 2026 summer transfer window opens.
Tonali has been a standout performer for Newcastle since returning from a betting ban and his form has been noted by scouts across European football.
Manchester United have been tipped to rival Arsenal for the Italian’s signature this summer, amid their pursuit of a replacement for Casemiro, although both clubs will face competition from Real Madrid, as per The Sun.
Los Blancos failed to replace Luka Modric last year, following his departure to AC Milan on a Bosman deal, and they are determined to sign at least one new central midfielder ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Adam Wharton, Angelo Stiller, Kees Smit, Enzo Fernandez and Vitinha have all been linked with the Bernabeu outfit over the past few months, although they have now reportedly added Tonali to their list of midfield targets amid reports that he could leave Newcastle this summer.
It’s claimed that Real Madrid scouts were in attendance to watch Tonali in action during Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday evening, with The Sun reporting that a €115 million (£100m) battle is expected to take place this summer.
Analysis: Will Sandro Tonali leave Newcastle?
While Arsenal and Real Madrid are both eager to finalise a deal for Tonali, the Italy midfielder recently confirmed that he remains happy at Newcastle.
Amid speculation of a summer exit, the former AC Milan star told reporters in February: “I work every day with the gaffer, the gaffer works every day with me, and our relationship is perfect.
“It's not broken and I think this is perfect for the team. We try to do the best for this team, every game, because we play a lot of games - every three days, we play, and we have to be concentrated every time in the training ground to do the best for our team.”
Tonali has registered 10 goal contributions in 45 appearances across all competitions for Newcastle so far this season and his current contract at St James’ Park is due to expire in 2028.
