The news caused a ripple as it came off the back of Kroos playing some of the best football of his career in recent weeks. The 34-year-old has been ageing like a fine wine and looks set to star for Real Madrid in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund and at the Euros.

In March, Kroos returned to the German national team for the first team since announcing his international retirement after Euro 2021 and the midfielder is part of Julian Nagelsmann's squad for the upcoming tournament, providing valuable experience, leadership and quality in a crucial position.

Vazquez responds

Few people expected Kroos to retire after his stunning form of late, with even transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claiming just a few weeks ago that the German looked likely to extend his Real Madrid contract by a further year.

Kroos explained his decision thus: "My ambition was always to finish my career at the peak of my performance level." He now looks set to do exactly that in a few weeks time.

With many football supporters shocked by the news, Kroos took to X on Tuesday afternoon and quipped: "I‘m trending at least?" Teammate Lucas Vazquez didn't take too kindly to this joke and simply responded with 'f**k you' and four middle finger emojis, expressing what many a Madridista will have felt upon hearing of the news of the midfield maestro's impending retirement.

Kroos has to date played north of 300 games for Los Blancos and made over a century of appearances for Germany. After winning LaLiga, he still has a chance to claim the Champions League and European Championship trophies before leaving the game.
