Ex-Arsenal striker Alan Smith believes that his former club will sell Viktor Gyokeres in the upcoming January transfer window if they are able to sign a new centre forward.

The Sweden international netted 21 goals across all competitions during his debut campaign at the Emirates Stadium last year, but he has fallen behind Kai Havertz in the pecking order and he is still yet to make his first Premier League start of the season.

Gyokeres was linked with a possible Gunners exit over the summer, amid rumours that he could be included in a swap deal bid for Atletico Madrid superstar Julian Alvarez, however a transfer never materialised as Arsenal had no interest in sanctioning a sale, as reported by FootballTransfers.

“If they did get another top striker, I think he would be sold, and he'd probably want to go, because he'd then be dropped one more place down the pecking order,” Smith admitted to Football.London when asked about Gyokeres’ future at Arsenal.

“So yeah, I think he would be sold, and there'd be plenty of clubs that would want him, I think.

“Whether Arsenal can get somebody in January, maybe a long shot. They'll probably be working on it now, but it's not easy, as we know, in January.”

Gyokeres is yet to score in six appearances for Arsenal so far this season and it’s understood that top target Christian Kofane could be on the market next year after contract negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen stalled.

What has Viktor Gyokeres said?

As reported at the time, FootballTransfers can confirm that suggestions Arsenal were willing to entertain offers involving Gyokeres in exchange for Alvarez were completely unfounded, and the striker has confirmed that he never considered leaving the north London giants before Deadline Day.

“Of course, there was a lot of speculation,” Gyokeres admitted to Swedish news outlet SVT Sport (via The Evening Standard) while on international duty last month. “But I had a full pre-season, and it felt good. I was fully focused on Arsenal. For me, staying was a given. I’m extremely happy at the club.

“Of course, it’s frustrating, no matter where you are. You always want to be on the pitch and make a contribution, score goals,” he added. “It can be frustrating at times, but I just try to do my best when I get the chance and focus on what I can control.”
