Man Utd want €50m forward after failed summer approach
Manchester United are reportedly among the clubs interested in signing Atletico Madrid forward Giuliano Simeone amid their pursuit of additional attacking reinforcements.
The Red Devils strengthened Michael Carrick’s first-team squad with the signings of Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow over the summer, but they also enquired about a possible deal for Simeone.
That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, who claim that Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur approached Atleti over the summer too, however all three clubs were told that a sale would not be sanctioned due to the 23-year-old’s importance at the Metropolitano.
It’s understood that Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi is a huge admirer of the Argentina international, while Man Utd and Man City are also keeping close tabs on his situation in the event that Atletico Madrid change their transfer stance ahead of the 2027 winter window.
Simeone has scored two goals and provided two assists in eight La Liga appearances so far this season, and he has been named in the starting XI in seven of the club’s nine matches across all competitions.
The Argentina attacker, who is the son of Atleti boss Diego, signed a new four-year contract at the club in January and with his current deal now running until 2030, the Spanish giants remain in an excellent negotiating position ahead of the January window.
Who will Man Utd sign in 2027?
Despite their interest in Simeone, Man Utd’s primary goal in the transfer market next year is to bolster their defensive roster.
A new left-back is top of their wishlist, following their failed bid for Newcastle United star Lewis Hall this summer, while the club are also expected to explore possible moves for a new right-back and a new central defender.
The centre forward position will also be on Carrick’s agenda if the Red Devils are able to finally offload Joshua Zirkzee. The Netherlands striker was set to depart Old Trafford over the summer, amid significant interest from several Serie A clubs, however Man Utd were unable to finalise a sale and he was forced to stay at the club.
If Bruno Fernandes departs, amid rumours that an exit could be on the cards, Carrick’s side will also need to dip into the market for a new attacking midfielder to replace the Portugal superstar.
