Guardiola’s Man City silver lining: Pep can keep promise and silence critics
Pep Guardiola has spent much of his managerial career being accused of taking the easy route to success. Manchester City’s potential punishment could now hand him the ultimate opportunity to prove those critics wrong.
Guardiola may have left his role as Man City manager in the summer, but the Catalan coach remains intricately linked with the under-fire Premier League side.
In the wake of the club being found guilty of 114 of 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League, Guardiola’s legacy has been questioned.
It’s an uncomfortable position for a man who won six Premier League titles, the Champions League and a whole lot more besides during his time at the Etihad Stadium.
He has come out in defence of City’s owners, issuing a strongly worded statement reiterating his belief in the club’s innocence, indicating that he will “always” be behind the club.
When Guardiola was still the Manchester club’s manager, he indicated he would not walk away from the team if they were relegated.
“I said when all the clubs accused us of doing something wrong and people say: 'What happens if we are relegated?' I will be here,” he said in November 2024.
Guardiola’s promise could still be put to the test
Clearly, the situation has changed with Guardiola quitting the club in the summer before the decision of the independent commission on City’s guilt was laid out.
But if the club were to be relegated, it would give Pep a unique opportunity to prove those who doubt him wrong.
Until the implications of the Man City case were made clear, one of the few criticisms of Guardiola as a manager was that he had always coached elite teams: Barcelona, Bayern Munich and then City.
He has never once in his career been pitched into a situation where he has had to work with anything but world-class players.
If City were to be demoted, all that could change as Nick Harris told the Transfers Podcast powered by FootballTransfers:
“It might not even get resolved this season, but let’s say it does happen. They end up in the Championship in the near future. Then it gets quite interesting because which players want to stay with Manchester City as a Championship club?
“Quite a lot probably won’t. Anyone who thinks that many are there because they love Manchester needs to give their head a wobble.
“Manchester City can't afford to keep the vast majority of their squad if they went to the Championship. They've got a £400m-a-year wage bill at the moment, maybe slightly higher.
“You go into the championship with that wage bill, you immediately fall massively foul of Football League PSR and FFP rules. So they’re going to have to get rid of most of their players to even meet wage requirements.”
Relegation could give Guardiola the ultimate test
While this is a nightmare scenario for Manchester City, it offers Guardiola the possibility of resolving two issues.
Firstly, it would allow him to keep his promise to City’s fans by leading the club through their hardest moment while it also opens the door to the challenge of winning with a type of player he has never worked with before.
If Guardiola was able to lead a new-look City back to the top-flight with a considerably weaker squad, it would go some way to silencing those who claim that his managerial career has been built around being a flat-track bully.
