Luis Enrique makes decision on becoming new Man Utd boss
Luis Enrique is reportedly set to snub interest from Manchester United in favour of signing a new contract at Paris Saint-Germain.
The 55-year-old has emerged as a potential candidate to become the new permanent boss at Old Trafford, however he is expected to reject a move to the 13-time Premier League champions this summer.
Enrique guided PSG to their first ever Champions League triumph last season and they remain in with a chance of defending their title after an 8-2 demolition of Chelsea in the last-16. The Parisians are also in pole position to win Ligue 1, although they face an unlikely challenge from RC Lens, who are just one point behind them in the French top flight table.
Rumours have suggested that Enrique could be tempted by a move to the Premier League this summer, however The i Paper have revealed that he will sign a new contract at PSG instead, with his current deal at the Parc des Princes due to expire in 2027.
It’s reported that the winter signing of Barcelona wonderkid Dro Fernandez was finalised to prove to Enrique that the PSG hierarchy believe in his long-term project, with club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi eager to agree a new deal.
Man Utd to miss out on Luis Enrique
Enrique was reportedly identified as a top candidate for the permanent Man Utd job by chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, but they are set to miss out on his signature.
Michael Carrick has therefore emerged as the frontrunner for the job after his impressive stint as interim boss. It’s understood that INEOS are keen to reward the 44-year-old if he achieves Champions League qualification this season, although a final decision won’t be made until the end of the campaign.
A deal for Enrique is, however, unlikely to be finalised.
