Kobbie Mainoo’s career at Manchester United appears to be hanging by a thread following the actions of his half-brother during the club’s thrilling 4-4 draw against Bournemouth on Monday evening.

The England midfielder was once again named on the substitutes bench by Ruben Amorim and it wasn’t until the 61st minute of the match that he entered the field of play as a replacement for Casemiro.

Mainoo is still yet to start a Premier League match for Man Utd this season and rumours of a January exit have intensified in recent weeks amid his lack of involvement.

Amorim has discussed the future of the 20-year-old during several press conferences throughout the campaign and he once again took aim at Mainoo ahead of the clash with Bournemouth.

“The problem is we are playing with two and you guys see Kobbie in a different way than I'm seeing,” the Man Utd head coach told reporters.

“Maybe if you play with three midfielders, not with just two, Kobbie will have more minutes. Imagine that this happens. Someone in front is going to lose their spot. Sometimes it's just the moment.

“I think I proved that if you change my mind [you can get into the team]. Casemiro is the biggest example. He was behind Toby [Collyer] and now he is a starter.

“It's like any other player. The door is open for any player to change my mind. But in the end, it's going to be the training, the games. Of course, he's not playing so many games, but Kobbs, he had opportunities, especially last year. Everyone had [opportunities].”

’Free Kobbie Mainoo’

In response to Amorim’s comments, Mainoo’s half-brother - former Love Island contestant Jordan Mainoo-Hames - was spotted wearing a T-shirt that read: ‘Free Kobbie Mainoo’ in the Old Trafford crowd.

This decision has added further fuel to the ongoing feud between Mainoo and Amorim, with BBC Sport describing it as “a move that risks making a delicate situation even more fraught.”

It’s understood that Mainoo could be allowed to leave Man Utd in January, although the club may only permit a short-term loan deal amid significant interest from across Europe.

Napoli are expected to renew their interest in the Englishman after failing to finalise a deal this summer, while La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are both keeping close tabs on his situation.

In addition, it has been widely reported that Chelsea are set to battle for Mainoo’s signature in 2026, with Enzo Maresca’s side regarded as the frontrunners in the Premier League.
