'So much quality' - Man Utd target hailed as transfer stance clarified
Borussia Dortmund boss Niko Kovac has showered Manchester United target Jobe Bellingham with praise amid ongoing links with a move to Old Trafford.
The England youth international endured a difficult start to life in Germany following a €30.5 million transfer from Sunderland. Bellingham was in and out of the team, and his father, Mark, cast a shadow over him with an outburst at sporting director Sebastian Kehl and coach Niko Kovac in August.
While still not a regular starter, the 20-year-old appears to be in the process of overcoming these early hurdles. He played the full 90 minutes against Copenhagen in the Champions League last week and the entire 120 minutes against Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB-Pokal in midweek.
On Friday evening, Bellingham was given a 30-minute cameo in a hard-fought 1-0 win over Augsburg. After the game, Kovac waxed lyrical about Bellingham's 'quality.' “He’s present, has great physicality and a technical quality that he showed again here in his 30 minutes on the pitch," he said.
"I really have no doubts about him - quite the opposite. We are building him up step by step. In fact, it is going even faster than I expected because the boy has so much quality.”
Bellingham not for sale
Due to his early struggles at Dortmund and allegedly having become unsettled after the incident with his father, there have been suggestions that he could return to England in 2026.
A host of Premier League clubs have been linked with him, including Man Utd, who are known to be in the market for a midfielder who is physical and can get around the pitch, like Bellingham.
However, it has been clear for some time that Dortmund are keeping faith in the 20-year-old. Claims of a January exit have been emphatically downplayed, and Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has reiterated that he is not for sale.
Dortmund are hoping that Jobe can follow a similar development path to his brother Jude, who was sold to Real Madrid for €127 million after three years in the Bundesliga.
