Man Utd plot SHOCK move for €62m Chelsea star
Manchester United are interested in Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia, according to a report.
The Red Devils are coming off a massive summer window in which they tried to address the biggest problem areas in Ruben Amorim's squad. The lack of offensive output was ostensibly resolved with three big-money attacking signings, while goalkeeper Senne Lammens arrived on Deadline Day.
However, the one area that Man Utd did not manage to bolster was the midfield, which is increasingly becoming the biggest headache for Amorim. Captain Bruno Fernandes does not work in a midfield two alongside the ageing Casemiro or the underwhelming Manuel Ugarte.
The Old Trafford club tried to bring in Brighton star Carlos Baleba, and the Cameroon international was keen on the move. However, his club had no intention to sell and refused to even set a price tag for the midfielder.
Man Utd had to eventually give up their pursuit, and they refrained from seriously targeting any other options, although they did make a late approach for Conor Gallagher, only for Atletico Madrid to make it clear that he was not available.
Man Utd could target Lavia in January
Man Utd are expected to go back in for Baleba in 2026 when Brighton will be more willing to sell. However, that does not mean that the 21-year-old would come cheap.
On the contrary, Brighton are hoping that the youngster can develop into one of the Premier League's best this season, which would allow them to demand north of €100 million next year.
Man Utd are therefore exploring alternative options, and Miguel Delaney reports that 'insiders' believe that Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia could become an option for the Red Devils.
The 21-year-old joined the Blues for €62m in 2023 and has shown himself to be a good Premier League midfielder, although one who has repeatedly struggled with injuries.
Moises Caicedo has cemented his place as one of the best defensive midfielders in world football at Chelsea, so it is possible that Lavia could seek a move away next year in a bid to become a regular starter elsewhere.
